Backlund's second act is one of the stranger character pivots in WWF history. He returned to the company in 1992 after a decade away, wrestled briefly as a babyface throwback, then turned heel in late 1994 by refusing to submit during a match against Bret Hart and going full erratic after losing the title. By 1996 he had been repositioned as a manager, which is where this two-pack lives. The Sultan was a masked character worked by Solofa Fatu Jr., the same man who would later become Rikishi, a name every wrestling fan from that generation knows immediately. Under the Sultan mask he was billed as a foreign heel managed by Backlund and Iron Sheik, and the masked run lasted into 1997 before the character was retired.
