Vintage Wrestling Memorabilia. An Era By Era Archive From Keep It Classic.

Intro

We have had a lot of wrestling come through this shop. WWF tagged tees from Titan Sports stamps, WCW tour shirts from the Nitro era, ECW grail pieces that show up once and never come back, the action figures, the VHS tapes, the cardboard cutouts of the wrestling rings that are technically toys and emotionally a portal to 1996. Wrestling is one of the strongest cohorts on our floor. The 707 East Fremont case has held more than three hundred wrestling pieces over the last two years. We pull more every week.

This page is a working archive. We organize it the way the business itself ran. Hulkamania, then the New Generation, then the Attitude Era, then Ruthless Aggression, with WCW and ECW as parallel tracks because that is how those companies actually moved. Within each era we describe what the merch looked like, what the manufacturer stamps were, what the noteworthy bouts and storylines produced collectibles for, and we link to specific archived pieces from our own pull history so you can see what has come through. If you walked into the shop today you might see two or three of these. The rest are in the archive because someone took them home.

Hulkamania. 1984 through 1993.

The first wrestling boom in the modern television era. Hulk Hogan headlined the first nine WrestleManias. The merch from this period is the foundation of the collectible market. Tags on tees from this run are Titan Sports, Inc., often in Stamford, Connecticut copyright stamps. The licensee print on the rear neck or hem is the dating tell. Single stitch hems are normal. Brands like Wild Oats and Spruce show up frequently on official run shirts.

What made the Hulkamania case heavy in collectibles was the convention market and the original action figure run. Hasbro's WWF figure line ran 1990 to 1994 and is one of the most documented collectibles in wrestling. We pulled a Hasbro Hulk Hogan in this cohort. Hasbro stamped the year on the figure foot. That is a clean date. If you find one without the stamp it is a third party reproduction.

The New Generation. 1993 through 1997.

WWF post Hogan. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels carry the company. Diesel and Razor Ramon are the New Generation pillars. Survivor Series traditional tournament format is a merch driver. The licensing stamps shift here. The Wild Oats and Color Tek imprints from this window run through 1996 and 1997 on tees, and you start seeing the heavier 100 percent cotton pre shrunk tag on Hanes and Lee blanks. Single stitch is mostly gone by 1997 on standard production. Double stitch hem is the New Generation signal.

The Undertaker debuted late Hulkamania (1990) but matured into a centerpiece in this era. Cactus Jack came in from ECW in this window before going on to define hardcore in the Attitude Era. The cartridge run on Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 produced WWF Royal Rumble and WWF WrestleMania titles that are now in the video game shelf rotation.

Attitude Era. 1997 through 2002.

The peak of wrestling as mainstream culture. Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H and DX, Mick Foley as Mankind, Edge and Christian, Eddie Guerrero. ECW invasion. Hardcore as a wing of the main roster. The cable rating wars with WCW Nitro on Monday nights are the macro context. The legal entity is still Titan Sports until 1999, then World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. takes over. After the World Wildlife Fund lawsuit in 2002 the company becomes WWE.

This is the era that built the contemporary t shirt collector market. Stone Cold 3:16 became the shirt that defined late nineties licensed apparel. Chalkline produced the satin jackets that are now grail level when they survive intact. The Rock's "If you smell what The Rock is cookin" line printed on multiple cuts. Degeneration X had its own apparel arm. The dating window on these is sharper than earlier eras. Tag manufacturer is usually Hanes Heavyweight or Lee Heavyweight, garment is heavier weight than nineties standard, and the licensee stamp shifts from Titan Sports to WWFE during 1999.

Ruthless Aggression. 2002 through 2008.

Post brand split. Smackdown and Raw separate rosters. Eddie Guerrero, Brock Lesnar, John Cena debut window, Batista, Carlito. The legal entity is now WWE. The licensee market consolidates. Apparel from this window is plentiful and cheaper to source than Attitude Era; values are climbing as the cohort that watched it as kids enters collector age.

WCW. The parallel track. 1988 through 2001.

World Championship Wrestling. Owned by Turner Broadcasting. From 1988 to 1995 it ran as the second company. From 1995 to 1998 with the New World Order angle and Nitro on Monday nights it was the dominant wrestling company in the country. Sting carried the company through the entire run. Hogan's defection to WCW in 1994 and the heel turn at Bash at the Beach 1996 created the NWO. Goldberg's undefeated streak in 1997 and 1998 was the period defining storyline.

WCW merch is a separate licensee universe from WWF. The official manufacturer stamps include Tour Champ, OmniGraphics, and the in house WCW design team. The NWO splinter merch is its own collectible category, with Wolf Pack red and black being the rarer print run.

ECW. The other parallel track. 1992 through 2001.

Eastern Championship Wrestling, then Extreme Championship Wrestling from 1994. Philadelphia based. Independent through most of its run, with a brief national TV deal on TNN in 1999. ECW's merchandise character is different from WWF and WCW. Lower print runs. Heavier graphic design, often closer to hardcore punk poster art than corporate sports licensing. Shirts that survived from the Bingo Hall era are now grail tier. Cactus Jack, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Taz, and the Dudley Boyz defined the look.

Cross over pieces are easier to find than original ECW house merch. The N64 game ECW Hardcore Revolution is one of the more accessible cross overs.

How to date a wrestling tee. Practical authentication.

The four signals that matter, in order:

1. Licensee stamp on the rear neck or hem. Titan Sports through 1999. WWFE 1999 through 2002. WWE 2002 forward. WCW pre 1988 was Jim Crockett Promotions; from 1988 forward it is WCW Inc under Turner. ECW house production is small and inconsistent; documented runs include the company's own catalog mailers and a handful of licensees.

2. Manufacturer tag on the inside neck. Single stitch hems and Made in USA tags from Hanes, Lee, Spruce, or Wild Oats are the pre 1997 markers. Mid 1990s and on, double stitch hems and heavier weight cotton dominate. Made in Honduras or Made in Mexico start showing up on licensed wrestling apparel in the late nineties.

3. The print itself. Original era prints sit on top of the cotton, often plastisol with a slight raised feel. Reprints and modern reissues often use a softer plastisol or water based ink that sinks into the fiber. Crackle pattern on a print is age, but it is not always old. Heat transfer reprints crackle within months.

4. The art. Wrestlers and storylines did not exist before they happened. A "WrestleMania X Seven" shirt cannot predate March 2001. A "Stone Cold 3:16" shirt cannot predate the 1996 King of the Ring promo. Date the art to the storyline, then check the tag. If the tag says 2018 the shirt is a reissue.

FAQ

Q. What is the difference between Titan Sports, WWFE, and WWE on a tag? A. Same company, three legal names. Titan Sports, Inc. ran from 1980 to 1999. World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. ran 1999 to 2002. WWE, Inc. is the current name from 2002 forward. The licensee stamp dates the production window.

Q. How do I tell a real Hasbro WWF figure from a reproduction? A. The foot stamp. Hasbro stamped the year and Hasbro Inc. on the bottom of one foot of every figure in the 1990 to 1994 run. Reproductions either skip the stamp or use a different font.

Q. Why is ECW merchandise so much rarer than WWF or WCW? A. Smaller company, smaller print runs, and a lot of merch was sold at the actual venue rather than through national retail. Survival rates of Bingo Hall era apparel are low. The TNN era from 1999 to 2001 had wider distribution and is more findable.

Q. Are WCW shirts the same dating system as WWF shirts? A. The eras line up roughly but the licensees do not overlap. WCW used Tour Champ, OmniGraphics, and in house. WWF used Wild Oats, Spruce, Hyland, and others. The single stitch and double stitch markers work the same way across both because they are garment construction, not licensee.

Q. The shirt I have says "Steve Austin" without "Stone Cold." Is it real? A. Possibly. The "Stone Cold" trademark window is later than the Steve Austin name itself. Earlier appearances during the Million Dollar Champion run in 1996 used "Steve Austin" without the gimmick name. Date the art to the storyline year and check the tag.

Q. What is the most collectible WCW item right now? A. Sting NWO Wolfpac shirts and the 1998 NBA cross over shirts (DDP and Karl Malone, Hogan and Dennis Rodman) consistently move at the top of the WCW market. Goldberg streak shirts from 1997 and 1998 are in the same tier.

Q. Do you authenticate wrestling memorabilia for non customers? A. We grade every piece we sell in hand. We do not run a paid authentication service. If you want a second opinion before a private sale, come by the shop with the piece. We will tell you what we see.
