THE PIECE

Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" hit theaters in November 1997 and came out on VHS in early 1998 through TriStar Pictures. This is that tape. The cover art runs the three leads, Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Dina Meyer, in full Mobile Infantry armor against a fiery alien landscape. The metallic gold and red lettering on the front is period-correct to the studio's marketing push, which leaned hard into the spectacle angle rather than the satirical layer Verhoeven was actually making.

The film opened against a crowded late-1997 sci-fi market. "The Fifth Element" had just cleared theaters in May, "Men in Black" had dominated the summer, and by November audiences were a little fatigued on effects-heavy action. "Starship Troopers" pulled respectable numbers but split critics hard. Roger Ebert gave it four stars and read the fascist imagery straight. Most of the trade press called it dumb. Verhoeven, who had grown up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands, found both reactions funny. The film spent years being reassessed, and by the mid-2000s the critical consensus had swung almost entirely. A physical VHS copy from this release year catches the film at exactly the moment before that reassessment started.

A war film designed to let you enjoy the spectacle and then sit with what you enjoyed.

This copy is pre-owned and one-of-one in the shop. The cassette itself, the plastic shell and the tape inside, is what you are buying, and the condition of that tape matters more than the box condition if you plan to play it. Check the tape portal on the front face of the cassette: the ribbon should sit flat with no visible slack or bunching. If the ribbon is loose, the tape will need a pencil-rewind before you run it through a deck. The box art is the secondary consideration. The tape window tells you what you actually own.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the VHS release year and distributor label printed on the tape shell or box spine against the 1998 TriStar home video release.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

Starship Troopers VHS. Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi action film. VHS sleeve with a fiery alien planet landscape filling the background, red explosions, rocky terrain, and spaceships in orbit above. The three leads. Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Dina Meyer, in the foreground in Mobile Infantry armor holding futuristic rifles. "STARSHIP TROOPERS" in massive gold and red metallic block lettering across the center. "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TOTAL RECALL AND BASIC INSTINCT" credit at the top. "Astonishing energy and bold, exuberant humor." pull quote at the bottom. A Paul Verhoeven Film.

Starship Troopers is Paul Verhoeven's satirical sci-fi masterpiece, disguised as a dumb action movie about soldiers fighting giant bugs, it's actually a razor-sharp critique of fascism and military propaganda. The film was misunderstood on release but has been completely reappraised as one of the smartest sci-fi films of the '90s. The VHS cover sells it as a straightforward action movie, which is exactly how Verhoeven wanted it. The bugs, the explosions, and the propaganda, "Would you like to know more?" A VHS that deserves another look.
