Double Platinum VHS
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"Double Platinum" is a 1999 ABC television film on VHS, starring Diana Ross and Brandy as a mother-daughter duo navigating estrangement, reunion, and a shared music career. Ross plays a pop legend who abandoned her daughter to chase fame. Brandy plays the daughter who became a star in her own right without her. Two generations of Black music royalty, one made-for-TV stage, no filler.
By 1999 Brandy was operating at the peak of her first wave. "Moesha" had been running since 1996, her self-titled debut had gone quadruple platinum, and "Never Say Never" with Monica had just won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo earlier that spring. Diana Ross needed no introduction in 1999 or any other year, but the pairing was pointed: Motown's defining soprano alongside the R&B voice that was dominating urban radio before "urban" became a banned Grammy category. ABC leaned into the casting. The film aired in May 1999, positioned as a prestige event, and the VHS release followed the standard made-for-TV distribution path through retail. Made-for-TV VHS releases from this period moved through rental chains and big-box shelves and were not pressed with collectors in mind, which is exactly why clean copies are harder to find now than theatrical titles from the same year. This is the home video copy, the one that sat on a shelf for the better part of twenty-five years before it arrived here at Container Park.
Two generations of R&B royalty, one VHS, no reconciliation until the third act.
The tape is in solid shape for a film that was not treated as a collectible on release. Cover art is bright with no significant fading on the spine. The ABC / Paramount Home Video branding is clear on the label side. The cassette shell itself shows no cracking or warping at the corners. Pick it up and check the tape window: ribbon should sit flat with no slack or bunching, which will tell you whether this one has been stored right and is ready to play.
OWNER VERIFY: confirm the 1999 ABC release date and Paramount Home Video distribution credit against the cassette label.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
