The piece

"As Good As It Gets" on VHS, pressed by TriStar Pictures and released to home video in 1998, is the complete retail clamshell edition of James L. Brooks's Oscar-dominating romantic drama. Jack Nicholson took Best Actor. Helen Hunt took Best Actress. The film swept the two top performance categories at the 70th Academy Awards, which almost never happens, and this is the copy that went on shelves the same year those awards aired.

Brooks had already built a resume that made studios hand him the keys: "Terms of Endearment," "Broadcast News," the early seasons of The Simpsons as executive producer. By the time "As Good As It Gets" arrived in theaters in December 1997, expectations were high and the film cleared them. Greg Kinnear pulled a Supporting Actor nomination for the same production. TriStar's home video arm moved fast on the back catalog push, and this edition hit retail in 1998 during the film's full promotional cycle. The Brussels Griffon on the cover, the dog Verdell, became one of the more recognizable VHS cover images of that late-90s run of prestige drama releases. Collectors building a shelf of awards-season VHS from that period in Hollywood will find this film near the top of that list alongside "L.A. Confidential" and "Good Will Hunting."

Sealed TriStar tape from the last years VHS ruled rental shelves and Oscar buzz drove impulse buys.

This copy is sealed in original shrink wrap, unplayed, no cracks or splits visible on the case spine. Shrink on a tape this age usually shows stress points at the corners or a dulling along the top seam where retail sticker adhesive bleeds through. Check the top seam of the shrink here: if the wrap is still sitting flush with no lift at the label edge, the seal is intact as found. The clamshell itself should be the standard TriStar black-spine configuration. Verdell is front and center on the cover art with the title treatment in gold against dark tone. Display value is real on this one. Flip it over and check the shrink seam where it folds across the back panel spine edge before you commit.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the shrink wrap is original factory seal and not a re-wrap, and that the clamshell interior tape shell shows no play wear on the reel hubs.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

VHS. As Good as It Gets (1997). Sealed. The VHS release of the Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt romantic comedy-drama. Standard VHS case still in original shrink wrap. A bright blue sky background. Jack Nicholson on the left. Laughing, looking down at a small brown and white Brussels Griffon dog he's holding. Helen Hunt at the center, smiling warmly. Greg Kinnear at the right, looking on with a gentle expression. "AS GOOD AS IT GETS" in large dark blue serif lettering across the center. "Winner! 1997 Academy Awards. Best Actor Jack Nicholson, Best Actress Helen Hunt" gold badge at the upper left. $9.99 price sticker. TriStar Pictures.

As Good as It Gets (1997) was the film that won Jack Nicholson his third Oscar and Helen Hunt her first. Nicholson as the obsessive-compulsive, misanthropic romance novelist Melvin Udall and Hunt as the tough, tender waitress who slowly breaks through his walls. The film also gave Greg Kinnear an Oscar-nominated turn as Melvin's gay neighbor. James L. Brooks directed a film that was simultaneously hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply human. The kind of adult romantic comedy-drama that Hollywood rarely makes anymore. The Brussels Griffon dog Verdell became a scene-stealer and one of the most beloved animal characters in '90s cinema. This sealed VHS is a pristine artifact of late-'90s prestige filmmaking. You make me want to be a better man.
