The piece

DJ Hero is the 2009 FreeStyleGames turntable rhythm game published by Activision for Xbox 360, and this copy includes the manual. The game shipped with a dedicated turntable controller and put 93 original mash-up tracks in front of players at a moment when music games were at the absolute peak of their commercial reach. This is the disc-and-manual portion of that package.

By 2009, Guitar Hero and Rock Band had already demonstrated that plastic instrument peripherals could move serious retail numbers, and Activision was betting the same logic would translate to DJ culture. The DJ Hero tracklist leaned hard into hip-hop and electronic crossovers: Jay-Z mashed into Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk's catalog woven into Grandmaster Flash, Eminem threaded against DJ Shadow. FreeStyleGames built the scratch mechanics from the ground up rather than porting Guitar Hero's fret logic, which gave the turntable controller a feel that players who actually spun records said was closer to the real thing than they expected. The game released in October 2009 alongside a limited Jay-Z and Eminem bundle that retailed for over $100, which meant the standard edition sold against significant noise at launch. Activision supported it through a sequel in 2010 before the music game market contracted sharply. That contraction is exactly why complete, well-kept copies are harder to find today than the genre's peak sales numbers would suggest.

The turntable controller was heavier than the guitars, harder to master, built for club culture.

This copy comes with the manual, which is worth noting because manuals from this generation of games shed fast. The disc surface and manual spine are the first things to check. Color printing on the box held up well across the 2009 print run, so fading on the cover art is a condition tell. If you are sourcing this as a display piece without the turntable controller, the manual and case alone read cleanly on a shelf. Run your thumb along the manual spine crease before committing to a grade.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm disc is Xbox 360 format and that no pages are detached from the manual binding.

Graffiti, boomboxes, turntables, stars, hip-hop and rock doodles covering every inch of the design. "DJ Hero" in large black and white text at the center. "SCRATCH & MIX THE HOTTEST HITS" tagline. "93 ORIGINAL MIXES" featuring Jay-Z, Eminem, Daft Punk, Queen, 50 Cent, David Bowie, The Killers, Rihanna, Jackson 5, Beastie Boys, and more. Activision publisher. Guitar Hero branding. Xbox Live. ESRB Teen rating. Includes manual.

DJ Hero (2009) was a brilliant spin on the Guitar Hero/Rock Band rhythm game formula. Instead of a plastic guitar, players used a turntable controller to scratch, mix, and crossfade between 93 original mash-ups created by real DJs. The game's soundtrack was genuinely innovative, pairing tracks that had no business working together. And making them sound incredible. Jay-Z vs. Eminem, Daft Punk vs. Queen, Beastie Boys vs. David Bowie. DJ Hero's mixes were good enough to stand on their own as music. Despite critical acclaim, the rhythm game market was already cooling, and DJ Hero became a cult classic rather than a mainstream hit. The turntable controller is sold separately. But the game disc alone is a piece of rhythm gaming history. Drop the needle.
