2009 was a specific moment in the Mario lineage. The franchise had spent much of the mid-2000s in 3D territory, with "Galaxy" on Wii arriving in 2007 to enormous critical reception. "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" was Nintendo's deliberate return to the side-scrolling format the series built its name on, the first time the classic left-to-right structure had appeared on a home console since "Super Mario World" on SNES in 1990. The headlining feature was simultaneous 4-player co-op, which had never been in a mainline home Mario title before. You could play as Mario, Luigi, and both Toads at once, chaos included.
