The piece

Media Blasters' "Voltron Collection: Black Lion" DVD tin is a collector's release built around the most recognizable face in the Defender of the Universe lineup. The Black Lion's embossed metalwork anchors the tin's exterior: yellow lettering, lightning bolt graphics, high-contrast black ground. This is a physical object sized and finished for a shelf, not a keep-it-in-the-drawer disc swap. Media Blasters pressed these in the early-to-mid 2000s as part of their broader Voltron licensing push, pulling episodes from the original 1984 "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" run that aired on syndication and made Black Lion the centerpiece of every playground argument about which lion actually mattered.

The original 1984 series arrived in the U.S. through World Events Productions, dubbed from the Japanese "Beast King GoLion" (1981–1982). WEP rebuilt the narrative structure, renamed the cast, and edited the footage for an American audience that was hungry for robot team content after "Shogun Warriors" and "Super Dimension Fortress Macross" had already moved the needle. Voltron pulled massive numbers for first-run syndication, running alongside "Thundercats," "He-Man," and "G.I. Joe" in afternoon blocks across independent affiliates nationwide. Black Lion was Pilot Keith's unit and served as the torso and head of the combined Voltron form, which made it the natural anchor for any sub-packaged release. By the time Media Blasters was pressing these tins, Voltron had already gone through a 1998 Toonami revival on Cartoon Network, which primed a second wave of collectors who grew up with the reruns. The tin format itself was a premium retail move common to the mid-2000s DVD collector market, competing with similar releases from Rhino Home Video and Anchor Bay.

Metal packaging for the series that made combining robots the apex of 1980s narrative ambition.

This copy is pre-owned and the condition is visible in the photos. The tin's embossed face panel and the disc housing inside are both worth a close read before you commit. Look at the tin's embossed lip edge on the short sides, where surface contact during shelf storage tends to show first on releases like this. Any corner denting or paint scuff along that seam will tell you the storage history faster than anything else.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm disc count and episode range against the back panel of the tin to verify which volume or volumes are included in this specific set.
