Colosseum Athletics made collegiate game-day jerseys through the 1980s and into the early 1990s, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers version in maroon mesh is one of the sharper pieces they put out. This is an XL, made for the floor, maroon body with gold "MINNESOTA" in tackle twill across the chest and the shoulder-strap "GOPHERS" lettering that marks it as the road or alternate colorway rather than the gold home cut.
Minnesota basketball in the late 1980s was a Big Ten program with real teeth. Clem Haskins took over in 1986 and almost immediately turned Williams Arena back into a problem for visiting teams. By 1989 the Gophers were NCAA tournament regulars, Melvin Newbern and Richard Coffey were putting together the kind of Big Ten campaigns that sold out the Barn, and the maroon-and-gold uniform set was on national television more than it had been in years. Colosseum was supplying a significant portion of the college licensed apparel market during that stretch, competing with Champion and Sand-Knit for shelf space at campus bookstores and sports chains. Maroon is holding without significant fade, and the gold tackle twill on the chest shows no visible cracking or lifting at the edges. The shoulder-strap text reads clean on both sides. This one wears well framed or on the court at an intramural game 35 years after it was made. Pull the collar flat and check the V-neck embroidery stitching for any separation from the base fabric before it goes on the wall.
