There’s Something About Mary VHS Tape
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
Released in the summer of 1998 by 20th Century Fox, "There's Something About Mary" hit VHS that fall into a rental and retail market that still treated physical tape as the primary home-viewing format. This is that tape, factory-pressed by Fox on the white sleeve edition, with Cameron Diaz front and center in the pink dress, blonde bob, small dog tucked under her arm. The Farrelly Brothers comedy that rewrote the rules on what a mainstream studio release could get away with, in a box you can hold.
The summer of 1998 was a genuine peak for R-rated studio comedy. Fox had been threading the needle between broad comedy and genuine star-making vehicles through the mid-to-late 90s, and "Mary" arrived at exactly the right moment. Ben Stiller had been building toward a lead role for years off the back of his MTV sketch show, "Reality Bites," and "Flirting with Disaster." Cameron Diaz had "The Mask" and "My Best Friend's Wedding" on the ledger but this was the performance that closed every argument. Matt Dillon as Pat Healy is one of the decade's great comedic turns, full stop. The film grossed over $176 million domestic on a $23 million budget, making it one of Fox's biggest comedy returns of the decade. The Farrelly Brothers had "Dumb and Dumber" and "Kingpin" before this but "Mary" was the film that made the industry take them seriously as a franchise-level creative team. VHS copies circulated heavily through rental chains, and the Fox special edition run that came to retail included bonus footage and a karaoke music video component that made it a notable release even among collectors who track late-90s special edition tape pressings.
The tape that made hair gel a punchline and turned Cameron Diaz into a rental phenomenon.
This copy presents on the white sleeve in solid shape. The cassette shell carries the Fox logo stamp on the spine. Hold the tape up to light and check the ribbon sits flat with no slack or bunching. The special edition designation is printed on the front face of the sleeve, not a sticker add-on, so check that print registration is clean and the sleeve corners are not split or soft. If you are buying this to display on a shelf, the white sleeve reads well face-out. If you are buying it to play, run a few seconds of fast-forward before committing to a full playthrough and watch the tape window for even, steady ribbon movement.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the "Special Edition" designation and whether bonus footage content is physically present on this cassette (some copies circulated with the special edition sleeve but standard tape content).

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
