The piece

"The Mexican" came out in March 2001 on a DreamWorks release, a studio at the peak of its late-90s and early-2000s run, and this is the retail VHS tape from that original home video window. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. First time on screen together. Gore Verbinski directing before he became the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise architect. The sleeve is the one with the ornate antique pistol illustration against a distressed red text treatment, which is exactly how DreamWorks sold this thing to the Blockbuster wall.

2001 was a particular moment for DreamWorks home video. The studio had come off "Saving Private Ryan," "American Beauty," and "Gladiator" in the preceding years, and the VHS catalog reflected that confidence. "The Mexican" was positioned as a prestige comedy-adventure, not a tentpole, which meant the home video packaging leaned into the film's visual identity rather than leading with star head shots the way mid-90s tapes used to. Verbinski's eye was evident even in the promotional materials. The pistol illustration on the spine reads more like a vintage travel poster than a movie tie-in, which is part of why this sleeve holds up. DreamWorks VHS releases from this period used a consistent label stock and imprint format that collectors have tracked closely since physical media fandom started reasserting itself around 2020.

The last wave of studio comedy on tape, before franchise IP became the only greenlit premise.

This copy is VHS format, sold as a one-of-one piece at Keep It Classic in Container Park. Condition on the sleeve should be assessed in person, the red text treatment on sleeves like this is prone to surface scuffing at the corners and along the spine ridge where the tape sat in the rental rack or on a home shelf. The cassette shell itself is the standard black DreamWorks home video housing. Before you commit, flip the sleeve over and check the bottom corner seam where the cardboard folds and glues, that junction shows condition faster than the face does.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm VHS release year is 2001 (original U.S. home video release) and not a later reissue pressing.

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. y2k tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

The Mexican (2001) was a romantic comedy adventure that paired two of the biggest movie stars in the world. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts together for the first time. Directed by Gore Verbinski (before he went on to direct the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), the film followed a hapless bagman (Pitt) sent to Mexico to retrieve an antique pistol with a cursed history, while his girlfriend (Roberts) gets kidnapped by a hitman (James Gandolfini, in a role that showed his range beyond Tony Soprano). The pairing of Pitt and Roberts was a massive event. They were arguably the two biggest stars on the planet at the time. The film's sun-drenched Mexico cinematography and offbeat humor gave it a distinctive charm. Early-2000s star-powered VHS tapes are peak Hollywood glamour on tape. Viva la Mexican.
