The Inspectors VHS
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"The Inspectors" is a 1998 Showtime original thriller on VHS, starring Louis Gossett Jr. and Jonathan Silverman as U.S. Postal Inspection Service agents working a mail bombing case. Made-for-cable, late-90s, released directly into the Showtime rotation before home video. This is the retail tape.
Showtime was deep into original programming by 1998, building out a slate of mid-budget thrillers and crime dramas that played well on tape because they were built for the small screen from frame one. Gossett Jr. came into this one as an Academy Award winner: Best Supporting Actor for "An Officer and a Gentleman" in 1983. The film leans on that weight. He plays the senior federal agent; Silverman, best known from "Weekend at Bernie's" (1989) and the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan," plays the younger partner. That pairing of gravitas-versus-lightness is doing real work in the movie. The Postal Inspection Service as a dramatic setting was not a Hollywood default, which is part of why this tape ends up being a curiosity item. Federal mail crime procedural, cable budget, two recognizable leads. That combination did not survive the decade in any form. By the time streaming killed the made-for-cable thriller shelf, tapes like this one were already gone from retail.

This copy carries the standard retail clamshell sleeve with blue-tinted close-up photography and an explosion composition on the front panel. That is the visual language of late-90s cable thriller packaging: high-contrast and direct. The tape itself is the mass-market release, not a screener or library dupe. Condition on the sleeve and cassette body should be checked against what you see in the photos. Before this one goes on the shelf, run the tape window. Ribbon should sit flat with no slack and the leader should be fully wound.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
