The piece

The Model 2 Sega Genesis is the revised, slimmed-down version of Sega's 16-bit console, released in 1993 as a direct answer to consumer feedback about the original's bulk. Same processor, same library, tighter chassis. The Model 2 is easy to spot: no headphone jack on the front, a simplified volume dial on the right side, and a lower-profile cartridge slot. This one comes in the standard black colorway with the six-button controller, which matters.

The Genesis had its fullest run between 1989 and 1995, but the Model 2 years, 1993 through the console's wind-down, are where the library hit its ceiling. "Mortal Kombat II" arrived in 1994 and the Genesis version outsold the SNES port partly because of the six-button pad. "Streets of Rage 3" came out in 1994. "Earthworm Jim" in 1994. "Vectorman" in 1995. "Comix Zone" in 1995. The platform was running hot even as the Saturn was being announced. Sega was supporting two hardware generations at once, and the Genesis catalog kept expanding anyway. The six-button controller shipped here is the correct input device for that whole stretch of the library. The three-button pad worked, but the six-button is what the fighters were built around. If you have a copy of "Mortal Kombat II" or "Eternal Champions," you already know why the button layout matters.

The last purely 16-bit Sega console before the company pivoted and lost the plot.

This copy includes the six-button controller, which is the desirable configuration. Condition on these Model 2 units varies widely depending on storage: the cartridge slot housing is the first place to show stress, and the power and reset buttons can get sticky from dust or humidity. The controller connector port on the front panel is worth checking for bent pins before anything gets plugged in. The simplified aesthetics of the Model 2 hold up well cosmetically when the unit has been stored indoors. Run your eye along the cartridge slot lip and the underside vent panel for any cracking or yellowing before you commit to the piece.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm this is a Model 2 unit (no front headphone jack) and that the included controller is the 6-button variant (MK-1653 or equivalent), not the original 3-button pad.

The last purely 16-bit Sega console before the company pivoted and lost the plot.
SEGA / BLUE RIBBON

The Sega Era

Sega's 90s catalogue moved fast and took risks. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, the arcades that fed them, the merchandise that trailed each launch. The blue-ribbon years produced cartridges, plush, promotional cards, and magazine inserts that rarely made it past the living room floor. What landed here was stored carefully enough to survive two console generations.

Sega Genesis Video Game Console, the Model 2 Sega Genesis (MK-1631) in black. Compact, streamlined design with the top-loading cartridge slot, power and reset buttons on the front, and the "SEGA" logo on the front panel. Includes a 6-button Sega Genesis controller with directional pad, A/B/C face buttons, X/Y/Z shoulder buttons, Start button, and Mode button. Power cord included. The Model 2 Genesis is the sleeker, more compact revision of Sega's legendary 16-bit console.

The Sega Genesis was Nintendo's fiercest rival in the console wars of the early '90s, "Genesis does what Nintendon't" was the battle cry, and for millions of gamers, the Genesis was home. Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat with the blood code, the Genesis library is stacked with classics. The Model 2 is the most common and reliable revision, and the 6-button controller is the preferred version for fighting games. A working Genesis with a controller is the gateway to one of the greatest game libraries ever assembled.
