Miguel Angel Lopez Diaz built the Rey Misterio character through CMLL and the Tijuana independents across the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s, long before his nephew Oscar Gutierrez carried the mask north. The Sr. character was a rudo almost his entire career. That matters here because "rudo" in lucha is not just heel shorthand. It is a social contract between the performer and the audience in towns like Tijuana where kayfabe ran deeper and longer than it ever did north of the border.
