The piece

"Pokemon: The Movie 2000" on VHS, released by Warner Home Video in 2000, is the second theatrical Pokemon film and one of the most recognized tapes of the Y2K era. Lugia anchors the cover art, wings spread, flanked by the bird trio, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, across a dark sleeve with metallic foil lettering. The "Exclusive Bonus Features" banner runs across the bottom of the sleeve, a standard inclusion for the Pokemon VHS retail push that year.

This film arrived at peak Pokémania, roughly 18 months after the original Pokemon movie sold out theaters across North America in November 1999. By 2000, the anime had locked in its Saturday morning slot on Kids' WB, the card game was moving millions of packs monthly, and Warner Home Video was the distribution partner pushing VHS releases to every major retailer. The sequel centered on Lugia as the focus Pokemon, a pivot from Mewtwo that reflected how hard Lugia had hit in the "Gold and Silver" games released just ahead of the film. The VHS format at this point was in its last commercial run before DVD overtook it, which means surviving sealed or near-sealed copies from this release have gotten harder to find as collections turn over. This one came out of a private collection, not a store shelf.

Lugia's wings catch the light the same way they did in 2000.

The sleeve shows a dark navy background, the metallic "Pokemon The Movie 2000" title text, and the bird trio in full color on the front face. Condition on VHS tapes from this period lives in the sleeve corners, the tape housing, and the label on the cassette itself. Check the sleeve corners for split seams, run a finger across the tape window on the cassette shell to confirm the ribbon sits flat without slack, and look at the cassette label for any moisture ghosting or peeling at the edges.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the year of release (2000) against the copyright line printed on the cassette spine or inside the sleeve tray card.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. y2k tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
