SingleTrac sank Twisted Metal to the ocean floor and the physics held.
SONY / POLYGON ERA

The PlayStation Index

Sony's polygon era rebuilt what a console could look like on a shelf. 90s PlayStation releases shipped with jewel cases, foldout manuals, demo discs, and promotional boxes that were treated as disposable at the time. The ones that held on, through moves and attic boxes and thrift bins, land at the shop with the printing still sharp. We list them with the marks honest.

PlayStation case for "Critical Depth" by SingleTrac and GT Interactive. The standard PS1 jewel case with black PlayStation spine features an underwater scene. Bizarre weaponized submarines battle in the deep ocean. A large shark-shaped submarine with glowing red eyes and jagged teeth dominates the center, while other submarines fire weapons amid bubbles and aquatic chaos. A red banner reads "FROM THE DEVELOPERS WHO KNOW VEHICULAR COMBAT." "CRITICAL DEPTH" in large gold metallic text on the upper right. GT Interactive Software publisher logo and SingleTrac developer logo at bottom. Teen (T) ESRB rating.

Critical Depth (1997) by SingleTrac was essentially Twisted Metal underwater. And that's exactly what the "from the developers who know vehicular combat" tagline promised. SingleTrac was the studio behind the original Twisted Metal and its sequel, and they applied the same arena combat formula to submarines. Players chose from a roster of bizarre underwater vessels. Each with unique weapons and special attacks. And battled in deep-sea arenas. The game was a creative spin on the vehicular combat genre that SingleTrac had invented. If you loved Twisted Metal but wished it was wetter, this was your game. Submarine warfare, SingleTrac style.
