Magnolia Blockbuster Case VHS (2 Tapes)
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"Magnolia" on VHS, two-tape Blockbuster rental set, New Line Cinema, 1999. This is the full 188-minute Paul Thomas Anderson cut pressed to cassette and shelved inside an actual Blockbuster rental case, the kind of artifact that spent years behind a counter before anyone called it collectible. Two tapes, original blue and yellow clamshell cases, with the rental infrastructure still intact: the barcode stickers, the weekly return labels, the spine notation reading "COPY 2 OF 2."
New Line Cinema greenlit "Magnolia" on the strength of what PTA had done with "Boogie Nights" two years earlier, and the studio gave him three hours and an ensemble cast that ran from Tom Cruise to Philip Baker Hall to Julianne Moore to Jason Robards to William H. Macy. The film arrived in December 1999, platform release expanding into wide before the year closed, right at the tail end of the decade that made the video rental store a neighborhood institution. Blockbuster was still near its peak store count in 1999, somewhere north of 7,000 locations in the U.S. alone. A film like "Magnolia" sat in the drama section between the franchise blockbusters, and rental copies picked up the kind of use-history that shrink-wrapped retail copies never did: the stickers layered, the cases scuffed, the tape windows showing real mileage. That layered rental history is exactly what makes this copy a different object than a sealed retail VHS.
The two-tape format forced you to acknowledge the commitment halfway through the fall.
This copy carries all of it. Both cassettes are present. The clamshell cases show the Blockbuster livery in the blue and yellow colorway the chain ran through the late-period store era. The rental codes and return stickers are readable. "COPY 2 OF 2" on the spine tells you this store stocked multiples, which tracks for a film that moved serious rental volume on the strength of awards conversation heading into the 2000 cycle. Display this as a two-tape stack with the spines facing out, or open the case and show the cassettes side by side. Before you commit, check the tape window on both cassettes: ribbon should sit flat with no slack or bunching, which tells you the tape was rewound and stored correctly before this copy left circulation.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm both cassettes are present and the "COPY 2 OF 2" spine label is legible on the correct tape.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
