The piece

Mito Koumon II: Sekai Manyuu Ki is a 1990 Famicom action-adventure title published by Sunsoft, built on the bones of one of Japanese television's most durable franchises. The Mito Koumon drama had been running on TBS since 1969, week after week, and by 1990 the character was embedded deep enough in Japanese pop culture that Sunsoft greenlit a sequel to their first Famicom adaptation with a globe-trotting premise that sent the old lord and his retainers well outside feudal Japan's borders.

The first Sunsoft Famicom entry came out in 1987 and followed the structure of the drama fairly closely, a feudal Japan romp with Koumon and companions Suke-san and Kaku-san working through regional corruption. The sequel broke that mold. Sekai Manyuu Ki, which translates roughly to "World Travel Record," pushed the story into international territory, which was an unusual creative swing for a franchise that had always stayed planted in Edo-period Japan. Sunsoft was running a strong late-Famicom catalog in this period. They had Blaster Master in 1988, Batman in 1989, Gremlins 2 in 1990. The company knew how to adapt licensed properties and package them into competent action-adventure titles, and this one shows that same production sensibility applied to a domestic IP that Western collectors rarely encountered.

Sunsoft's world-tour sequel, boxed and saturated, anchoring the Famicom shelf that knows adventure ran deeper than RPG.

The box art on this copy features chibi-style character art of Koumon and his companions set against a tropical backdrop, which is one of the more visually distinctive pieces of Famicom box art you will find in this category. Japanese Famicom boxes used the tall format with that matte cardstock finish, and the colors on this one read sharp. The cartridge itself carries the standard Famicom gray housing with the label printed in that warm red and yellow palette Sunsoft favored on domestic releases. This is a one-of-one in the shop. Check the cartridge label edge for any peeling at the corners before you commit to condition grade.

OWNER VERIFY: 1990 production year per the existing body reference, confirm against the cartridge label or box copyright line.

This is part of Nintendo's 90s run, the era that built the shop's back wall. Nintendo shipped cartridges, plush, promotional oddities, and packaging that most buyers threw out on the way to the game. What survived, mostly by accident, ends up here. Every piece is cleaned, photographed, and listed one at a time. Nothing on the archive shelf is a duplicate.

Mito Koumon is one of the longest-running and most beloved television dramas in Japanese history. Airing from 1969 to 2011, the show followed the real-life Edo-period lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni (known as Mito Koumon) as he traveled Japan in disguise, dispensing justice and righting wrongs. The Famicom sequel took the characters on a world tour. A lighthearted twist on the classic formula. Sunsoft was one of the most respected Famicom-era developers, known for games like Blaster Master and Batman. Licensed Famicom games based on Japanese TV dramas are fascinating cultural artifacts that bridge entertainment media in a way unique to Japan. Justice goes global.
