Executive Decision VHS

Warner Bros released "Executive Decision" on VHS in 1996, a mid-90s studio action picture directed by Stuart Baird and starring Kurt Russell as an intelligence analyst dragged into a mid-air hostage rescue operation. The film earns a footnote in action cinema history for what it does with Steven Seagal in the first act, a casting move that was either a genius bait-and-switch or a studio negotiation outcome, depending on who you ask. Either way, the film ran nearly two hours at a time when studios still believed a theatrical-length action release could carry a wide audience without a franchise name attached.

1996 was a particular year for Warner Bros action releases, with "The Long Kiss Goodnight" and "Eraser" both hitting the same broad audience in the same calendar year. "Executive Decision" arrived earlier, in March, and pulled respectable box office on the back of Kurt Russell alone. Russell was in a run that had gone from "Stargate" (1994) through "Escape from L.A." (1996) with no real misfire, and studios were still willing to bet a wide release on his name. Stuart Baird came to the project as an editor turned director, and that background shows in the pacing. The film moves. It does not stop to explain itself. John Leguizamo, Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, and Joe Morton fill out a cast that could carry any scene Baird needed covered.

This copy comes in its original clamshell sleeve. The sleeve art runs the standard Warner Home Video look for the period, blue and silver type with a central character image. Check the cassette body itself. The ribbon should sit flat and evenly tensioned. If you are displaying this one, the clamshell hinge tends to hold up well on copies that have not been rewound hard against a stop, so run your thumb along the hinge spine before you commit the shelf position.
