Dances with Wolves VHS
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
The Orion Home Video release of "Dances with Wolves" on VHS. Kevin Costner directed and starred in this 1990 western epic, and the home video edition brought the full scope of that film into living rooms across the country at a time when Orion was one of the few mid-major studios capable of putting a three-hour prestige western into wide theatrical release and backing it hard enough to secure Best Picture.
1990 was a loaded year for Orion. The studio had won Best Picture the year prior with "Driving Miss Daisy," and "Dances with Wolves" made it back-to-back. Seven Oscars total: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay. The competition that year included "Goodfellas," "The Silence of the Lambs" (which would win its own sweep the following year), and "Ghost." Costner's film held. The home video release gave the film a second life well into 1991 and 1992, when the extended director's cut also circulated on cassette. Orion would file for bankruptcy protection in 1991, making this release period a compressed run in the studio's history. VHS copies from this cycle carry that context in the packaging itself. The label work, the catalog numbering, the spine treatment all belong to a studio that was still functioning at full output before the financial collapse arrived.
Three hours, seven Oscars, and a sunset sleeve that still stops you mid-browse.
This copy presents as a standard clamshell release with the sleeve Orion used for the theatrical version. Gold title treatment on the front, plains and sky image behind it that matches the film's actual scope. Pre-owned, one copy available. Condition reads clean on the shell with no cracking at the hinge points. The tape itself should be inspected before playback: confirm the ribbon sits flat with no slack or bunching at the guide posts. A loose ribbon on a tape this age means a rewind is needed before you run it, not after.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm whether this is the theatrical cut release or the extended director's cut edition, as both circulated on Orion Home Video VHS with similar sleeve treatments.
Three hours, seven Oscars, and a sunset sleeve that still stops you mid-browse.
The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
