The piece

"Copycat" (1995) is a Warner Bros. theatrical release on sealed VHS, a psychological serial killer thriller built around two lead performances that studios rarely paired at that budget level. Sigourney Weaver plays Dr. Hudson, a criminologist with agoraphobia working the case from the inside of her apartment. Holly Hunter is the San Francisco detective who needs her. The killer, played by Harry Connick Jr., operates by reproducing famous murders in sequence, making the film procedurally dense and tighter than most of what came out of the genre that year.

1995 was a loaded moment for American crime thrillers. "Se7en" hit theaters the same fall and set a tone the rest of the decade chased. "Silence of the Lambs" was four years in the rearview and still casting a shadow over every serial killer script in development. "Copycat" walked into that context with an unusual structural choice: the expert is the victim, homebound and unreliable, not the hunter moving through crime scenes. Weaver had come off the Alien franchise and "Dave," Hunter off her Oscar win in "The Piano." The casting was unusual enough that the film holds a different weight than the genre average. Dermot Mulroney rounds out the principals on Hunter's side. Warner Bros. wide release, October 1995.

Studio thriller from the last years VHS mattered, sealed and untouched since wholesale.

This copy is sealed in original shrink wrap with the retail sticker still on. The plastic has not been cracked. The tape inside has never run. At 30-plus years out from original pressing, sealed VHS in this condition is harder to move through retail channels than the film's reputation suggests. The cassette shell color, label print registration, and sticker stock are all consistent with Warner Bros. mid-90s pressing standards. Display copy or still-sealed play copy, your call. Check the shrink seam at the top spine edge before any decision: that seam should be fully intact with no peeling at the corners.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm original 1995 Warner Bros. pressing date against the cassette label and copyright block on the shrink wrap sticker.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

VHS cover for "Copycat" starring Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter. The dark, moody cover shows Weaver's face on the left in a ghostly reflection, while Hunter appears inside a circular scope/lens holding a gun. The tagline reads "One man is copying the most notorious killers in history. One at a time. Together, two women must stop him from killing again. Or they're next." "COPYCAT" appears in red text at the bottom with credits for Dermot Mulroney and Harry Connick Jr. The tape appears sealed in shrink wrap. A yellow "Previously Viewed. 30 Day Guarantee. $6.99" sticker is affixed to the lower right.

The 1995 serial killer thriller that paired two of Hollywood's strongest leading women. Weaver as an agoraphobic criminal psychologist and Hunter as the detective investigating a copycat killer recreating history's most infamous murders. Released the same year as Se7en, it got somewhat overshadowed but stands on its own as a smart, suspenseful thriller with terrific performances. Harry Connick Jr. Is genuinely unsettling in an early villain role. The film was ahead of its time in exploring how serial killers study and mimic each other. Two powerhouse actresses versus one very disturbed mind.

VHS appears sealed in shrink wrap with Previously Viewed $6.99 sticker. Pre-owned. See photos for full condition details.. Weaver and Hunter on the case, still in the wrapper.
