Beverly Hills Ninja VHS Tape

Beverly Hills Ninja arrived in January 1997, six months before Chris Farley's final SNL episode and less than a year before his death that December. TriStar released it as a vehicle built entirely around his physical comedy, pairing him with Nicollette Sheridan and a premise that asked audiences to believe he was a white orphan raised by a Japanese ninja clan. The film opened at number one, pulled $31 million domestic, and was savaged by critics who missed the point. This was never Oscar bait. This was Farley doing a flying kick in a gi two sizes too small, crashing through walls, flipping over motorcycles, and turning martial arts into slapstick with the same manic energy he brought to Matt Foley and every other character he inhabited with full-body commitment.

The VHS sleeve is peak mid-nineties action-comedy design. Orange and yellow gradient, Farley airborne in a white gi, mouth open in a battle cry, fists clenched, palm trees and a glowing sun below him. The typography screams blockbuster. The image sells exactly what the tape delivers: ninety-three minutes of Farley hurling himself at every surface in frame. TriStar flooded Blockbuster and Hollywood Video with these in the spring of 1997, and they cycled through rental shelves until the format died. Most tapes from that run are long gone, junked in the digital switchover or sitting in storage units no one's opened since 2005. We see fewer Farley titles than you'd expect given how ubiquitous he was in the nineties, and Beverly Hills Ninja in particular seems to have had a lower survival rate than Tommy Boy or Black Sheep.

This copy still plays. Sleeve shows edge wear consistent with a tape that moved through multiple hands but was never left on a dashboard or buried under a pile of unsorted garage clutter. No rental stickers, no Blockbuster barcode, which suggests it was a sell-through purchase rather than a store discard. The orange and yellow have held their saturation. Farley's airborne form is still legible from across the room.

This is the one to own if you collect Farley's filmography or if you remember the specific texture of renting a comedy on a Friday night in 1997, rewinding it Sunday morning, and dropping it back in the slot on your way to work. It's also the tape to play if you want to show someone under twenty-five what a major studio comedy looked like before irony became the default mode. Farley commits so hard to every gag that the film becomes a document of a performance style that doesn't exist anymore. Slot it on the shelf next to your other nineties slabs or queue it up the next time you need ninety minutes of someone crashing through a koi pond in slow motion.
