VHS The War Wagon
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"The War Wagon" is a Universal Pictures Western from 1967, directed by Burt Kennedy, and the VHS copy in hand is the pre-owned clamshell release that Universal put out in the home video era. The pairing on the cover says everything: John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, armed, facing the same direction, which means they are reluctantly on the same side. That alone is the premise, and it works.
1967 was a hinge year for the Western genre. Studios were watching the Italian import market shift audience expectations toward cynicism and moral ambiguity, and Hollywood responded by leaning harder into star-powered spectacle. Wayne was at the absolute center of that countermovement. He had won no Oscar yet, was two years out from "El Dorado," and was pulling maximum commercial weight for Universal while John Ford's classical Western era was closing down around him. Kirk Douglas, meanwhile, was coming off "Cast a Giant Shadow" (1966) and operating in full anti-hero range. The setup here, a gold-shipment heist wrapped in old-school frontier adventure, gave both men room to play against type just enough to feel dangerous. Howard Keel, Keenan Wynn, and Bruce Cabot round out the cast, which means no weak seconds in the supporting tier. This is a full cast, fully deployed.
Wayne and Douglas split a heist western down the middle, all banter and leverage.
The clamshell itself carries the painted poster artwork, both stars illustrated in fighting posture, which is the format Universal favored for their Western back catalog through the late 1980s VHS runs. Pre-owned condition means the shell has years of shelf history on it. Check the hinge seam where the two halves of the clamshell meet: that joint is the first place these Universal cases show stress cracks or white-stress marks from repeated opening. The tape inside should rewind and play without ribbon drag. A solid copy of this title in clamshell is not an easy pull from the discount bin, and this one came through the shop doors already in the collection worth keeping.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
