The piece

Warner Bros. "The Pelican Brief" VHS, released 1993. This is the retail clamshell from the original theatrical run, pressed and distributed by Warner Home Video during the window when Grisham adaptations were moving faster than publishing houses could optioned them. The sepia-warm front art puts Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington in frame together, the U.S. Capitol dome ghosted into the background collage behind them. That artwork is the one from the theatrical campaign, not a later reissue crop.

1993 was a specific moment for the legal thriller as a genre. Grisham had published "The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief" back to back in 1991 and 1992, and Hollywood ran with both simultaneously. Sydney Pollack's "The Firm" with Tom Cruise hit theaters June 1993. Alan Pakula's "The Pelican Brief" arrived December 1993, same calendar year. Two Grisham properties, two major studios, two summer-to-holiday slots, neither stepping on the other. Warner Bros. had Pakula, who had already directed "All the President's Men" and "Sophie's Choice," so this was not a franchise gamble. It was a prestige bet on proven material with two of the most bankable names of the decade at the top of the cast. Roberts was post-"Pretty Woman" and post-"The Player." Washington was two years out from his Oscar for "Glory." The combination drove the film to over $195 million worldwide against a $45 million budget. Home video demand followed exactly that trajectory.

The tail end of VHS as the default, the format that lived on television sets.

This copy presents in solid rental-shelf condition. The clamshell shell shows the expected surface scuffs from circulation but holds its shape without warping or stress cracks at the hinge. No sticker residue across the front art panel, which matters for the sepia-toned print. The cassette itself should be rewound and the tape ribbon checked for any edge fray before play. Spine label is the detail that separates an original Warner Home Video pressing from a later Columbia House or BMG replication run. Pull the cassette, read the spine label, and match the catalog number against the rear insert.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm catalog number on cassette spine label against the rear insert to establish original WB pressing vs. a later club or reissue copy.

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

The Pelican Brief (1993) was the third John Grisham novel adapted for the big screen. Following The Firm and The Client. And paired two of the biggest movie stars on the planet: Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. Roberts played a Tulane law student who writes a legal brief connecting the assassination of two Supreme Court justices to a massive conspiracy, and Washington played the Washington Herald reporter who helps her survive.
