The piece

"O" is a 2001 Lionsgate release on VHS, a teen-cast retelling of Othello set inside a prep school basketball program. Mekhi Phifer plays Odin James, the only Black student at Palmetto Grove Academy, with Josh Hartnett as the scheming Hugo and Julia Stiles as Desi. The film was shot in 1999 but sat in distribution limbo for two years while studios flinched at a Columbine-era release involving school violence. Lionsgate picked it up and got it out in 2001.

That two-year shelf delay is part of the record. The film finished production while Stiles was already deep into Shakespeare adaptations on screen: "10 Things I Hate About You" came out in 1999, then "Hamlet" with Ethan Hawke in 2000, then this. Three Shakespeare-sourced films in three years made her the center of a legitimate micro-genre moment in teen cinema, one the trades noticed at the time. Phifer was coming off "Clockers" and "Soul Food" and brought actual dramatic weight to what another production might have played as a high school thriller. Hartnett, a year out from "The Faculty," leaned into a villain register he rarely got to use. The film eventually found its audience on cable and home video rather than in wide theatrical release, which makes the VHS format the primary way most people actually saw it in the years right after its run.

Shakespeare refracted through privilege, competition, and the racialized dynamics of American high school sports.

This copy carries the standard Lionsgate clamshell configuration from the period. The cover is front-loaded with a gold oversized O against a dark background, with the three leads arranged beneath it. Color on the case holds well, and the tape itself plays without the tracking drift that hits a lot of early-2000s Lionsgate stock when the shell has been stored poorly. Check the spine of the clamshell where the hinge meets the back panel. That seam cracks on copies that took hard shelf pressure, and its condition tells you how this one was stored.

OWNER VERIFY: 2001 release date and Lionsgate distribution credit against the cassette label and case spine.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. y2k tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

VHS. "O" (2001). The VHS release of the modern Othello adaptation. Standard VHS case with a dark, moody cover. Julia Stiles at the upper left. Blonde, intense gaze. Josh Hartnett at the upper right. Dark hair, brooding expression. Mekhi Phifer at the bottom center. Shirtless, arms raised, reaching upward toward a large gold "O" that dominates the center of the cover. Red and blue tones create a dramatic atmosphere. "MEKHI PHIFER JOSH HARTNETT JULIA STILES" credited at the top. "Trust. Seduction. Betrayal." tagline. "The Most Controversial Movie of the Year.". Esquire quote at the bottom.

"O" (2001) was a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Othello set in an elite Southern prep school. Mekhi Phifer as Odin (Othello), the school's star basketball player; Josh Hartnett as Hugo (Iago), the jealous teammate who manipulates him; and Julia Stiles as Desi (Desdemona), caught in the middle. The film was delayed for two years after the Columbine shooting due to its themes of teen violence, adding to its controversial reputation. Stiles was on a Shakespeare-adaptation streak, also starring in 10 Things I Hate About You and Hamlet around the same time. The early-2000s teen drama wave on VHS represents the format's final chapter. Trust no one.
