VHS Good Morning Vietnam
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"Good Morning, Vietnam" on VHS from Touchstone Pictures, pressed in the late 1980s on the original blue clamshell. Robin Williams earned a Golden Globe and his second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor on this one, playing Adrian Cronauer, the Armed Forces Radio DJ whose broadcasts in 1965 Saigon were the loudest thing on the airwaves. The cover is the one collectors know: Williams in headphones at the mic, the American flag and military emblem behind him, against that blue field that stood out on every video store shelf it ever occupied.
Touchstone released the film in December 1987, directed by Barry Levinson. It arrived in a stretch when Williams was pivoting from television stardom into a run of dramatic-comedy work that would define the back half of his film career. The VHS followed in 1988, part of the first wave of major home video releases that made Touchstone a regular presence in rental stores nationwide. By that point video stores were the dominant distribution window for catalog titles, and a blue clamshell Touchstone release with Williams on the front was exactly the kind of title that turned over constantly. This copy preserves the physical artifact of that original retail push, not a later reissue or a repackaged budget release.
The rental-store version of a Williams performance that became a generational reference point.
The clamshell itself is the thing to look at first. Blue plastic, the Touchstone logo on the spine, the back cover still carrying the original promotional text and cast rundown. Tape condition will vary on a piece this age, so run it to confirm playback before displaying or storing. The spine label should read "Touchstone Home Video" without any third-party rental sticker overlap. Check the hinge points on the clamshell where the top and bottom shells connect, they see stress after decades of open-and-close cycles and the condition of those hinges tells you how this copy was handled.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm first-press Touchstone Home Video release (1988) versus later reissue by checking the catalog number printed on the spine label and the copyright text block on the cassette shell itself.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 80s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
