The piece

"Black Listed" is a 2003 direct-to-video action thriller on VHS, a Robert Townsend-directed project with Vanessa Bell Calloway and a cast that came out of the early 2000s urban action wave. The case is red-toned with a shattered-glass gun-barrel graphic on the front and silver block lettering across the title. This is the kind of release that bypassed multiplex runs and went straight to rental shelves, where Blockbuster and Hollywood Video were still moving units at a volume most people have since forgotten.

2003 was the tail end of the Blockbuster golden age. The DVD transition was underway but VHS hadn't collapsed yet. Studios and distributors were still pressing VHS copies of lower-budget releases because the rental infrastructure still existed to support them. Townsend had been a presence in Black cinema since "Hollywood Shuffle" in 1987 and "The Five Heartbeats" in 1991, and by 2003 he was working the direct-to-video space alongside a wave of producers who recognized that urban action thrillers had a loyal rental audience. Vanessa Bell Calloway was consistently working television and film in this period, appearing in projects that rarely got major theatrical pushes but found real audiences on the rental circuit. This tape came out during the last viable window for VHS as a commercial medium. Within two years the major rental chains had largely completed the format transition, and releases like this stopped being pressed in any volume.

By 2003 VHS was the archive, the only way to see films the streaming era forgot.

This copy is in pre-viewed condition, which means it spent time on a rental shelf. The original sticker is intact on the case. The red casing and gun-barrel graphic are present, the silver title lettering reads clearly, and there are no visible cracks on the case exterior. The tape housing appears undamaged. For display purposes the graphic side reads well from a distance. If you are buying this to play, run it forward to the start of the feature before committing, and check the tape leader at the top of the cassette for any creasing or oxide wear near the reel hub.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the 2003 production year and distributor against the copyright block on the case spine or back panel.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. y2k tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

Black Listed (2003) was an action thriller starring Robert Townsend and Vanessa Williams. Townsend, best known as a writer-director-comedian (Hollywood Shuffle, The Five Heartbeats), stepped into a dramatic action role. The film was part of the early-2000s wave of independent action thrillers that found their primary audience through home video and cable television. Robert Townsend is an important figure in Black cinema. His self-funded Hollywood Shuffle (1987) was a landmark of independent filmmaking, and The Five Heartbeats (1991) is one of the most beloved Black films of the '90s. Late-era VHS action films from Blockbuster's shelves are time capsules of the rental era's final days. Listed.
