The piece

Sega Sports World Series Baseball 2K2 is a complete-in-box Dreamcast title from 2001, one of the final MLB-licensed sports releases to ship for the console before Sega pulled the plug on the hardware. The cover art centers a Boston Red Sox pitcher mid-wind-up in a grey road jersey, and the orange online multiplayer badge on the case front confirms this build was designed for Sega's SegaNet infrastructure, the web-connected layer Sega had been pushing hard through 2000 and into the console's final commercial months.

By the time 2K2 arrived, the Dreamcast was already in its farewell season. Sega had announced the discontinuation in March 2001, so new software hitting shelves that year carried a strange energy: full-featured titles landing on a platform with a closing date on the wall. Visual Concepts had built the 2K baseball series into one of the stronger baseball sims of the period, with player-stat depth that competed squarely against EA's Triple Play and Sony's MLB series. The SegaNet hook was real, not a box-art promise: you could schedule online games through the modem port, which made the Dreamcast sports library a genuine proof of concept for online console sports years before Xbox Live normalized the format in 2002. Red Sox on the cover was not an accident. Boston's pitching rotation in 2001 featured Pedro Martinez coming off back-to-back Cy Young-caliber seasons, and he was a marquee visual pull for the licensed cover treatment.

The last great Sega baseball game on Sega hardware, Pedro on the mound, still boots clean.

This copy is CIB, complete in box, which matters here because the manual and registration inserts are where the SegaNet setup instructions live. Disc condition will drive playability, so pull it and check the read surface under direct light before you commit. The hinge points on late Dreamcast GD-ROM cases tend to stress-crack with age, so run your thumb along the interior spine seam and confirm there are no splits affecting the disc tray mount.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the 2001 release year and that the disc is GD-ROM format (not a CD-R), and check that the SegaNet online badge on the case exterior matches the online-enabled build noted on the back-of-box feature list.

SEGA / BLUE RIBBON

The Sega Era

Sega's y2k catalogue moved fast and took risks. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, the arcades that fed them, the merchandise that trailed each launch. The blue-ribbon years produced cartridges, plush, promotional cards, and magazine inserts that rarely made it past the living room floor. What landed here was stored carefully enough to survive two console generations.

World Series Baseball 2K2 (2001) was one of the final Sega Sports titles released for the Dreamcast. Part of the beloved 2K sports lineup that defined the console's gaming identity. The Red Sox pitcher on the cover appears to be Pedro Martinez, who was the most dominant pitcher in baseball during this era, winning three Cy Young Awards. The online multiplayer badge was cutting-edge for 2001. The Dreamcast was the first console to offer built-in online gaming, and sports titles were among the most popular online games. One of the Dreamcast's last great sports games.
