The piece

Select Records put out The Real Roxanne's self-titled debut cassette in 1988, right in the middle of the label's run as one of the few imprints actually built for hip-hop from the ground up. This is that tape. The format is right, the label is right, and the orange-and-black cover art on a Manhattan waterfront dock puts it squarely in the visual language of late-80s New York rap packaging.

The Roxanne Wars are one of the more chaotic origin stories in hip-hop. UTFO dropped "Roxanne, Roxanne" in 1984, Roxanne Shanté answered at fourteen years old, and then the industry tried to manufacture a controlled response with The Real Roxanne, brought in as UTFO's official designated counterpart. That backstory followed her onto this debut. Select Records at the time was running product alongside acts like Full Force and had a direct line into the Queens and Brooklyn scenes feeding the broader New York catalog. The album leaned into electro-funk production, which was already starting to share space with the harder drum-machine sound coming up underneath it. 1988 is exactly the year you hear both registers in the same release cycle. Run-DMC had moved past "Raising Hell" into "Tougher Than Leather." Public Enemy had "It Takes a Nation." The Real Roxanne's record belongs to that same calendar, different pocket, same city.

The answer record personified, on the format that ruled car decks and boomboxes in 1988.

The cover art is the draw on this copy. Bold orange and black, the Manhattan skyline across the water behind her, the kind of graphic design that assumed you were going to see this tape on a rack at eye level and needed to register in three seconds. Condition on the shell and the label print will tell you how much this one has been handled. Check the tape window: ribbon should sit flat with no slack, and the hub should spin clean when you give it a slow finger-roll.

The Real Roxanne. Self-Titled Cassette Tape. The cassette edition of The Real Roxanne's 1988 debut album. Standard cassette in clear shell case. The cover features The Real Roxanne (Joanne Martinez) in a full-body pose on a New York City waterfront. Sitting on wooden dock pilings with the Manhattan skyline in the background across the river. She wears a bold orange and black outfit with a matching hat, lace-up boots, and the confident pose of a hip-hop star. "THE REAL" in blue text at the upper left with "ROXANNE" in large gold lettering on a black bar below. A quintessentially late-'80s New York hip-hop image.

The Real Roxanne was a key figure in one of hip-hop's most famous feuds. The "Roxanne Wars" of 1984-85, which started with UTFO's "Roxanne, Roxanne" and spawned dozens of answer records. The Real Roxanne (produced by Howie Tee and Full Force) was the version backed by UTFO's label, and her self-titled debut album on Select Records delivered electro-funk and early hip-hop that defined the era. The NYC waterfront photo with the Manhattan skyline is a perfect encapsulation of late-'80s hip-hop culture. The city as backdrop, the bold fashion, the attitude. Golden age hip-hop cassettes are a collected category. The real deal.
