The piece

EA Sports' NHL 98 for Sega Saturn arrived in 1997 as part of a run of hockey titles that were quietly building the franchise into the dominant simulation on the market. The tall Saturn jewel case is intact here, complete with original disc and box art, a configuration that shrinks the surviving population considerably compared to loose-disc copies floating around the secondary market.

By 1997, EA Sports had been running the NHL license hard since NHL 92 on the Genesis, and each annual iteration added weight to the series. NHL 97 had introduced the first true 3D gameplay engine in the franchise. NHL 98 refined it, adding improved goalie AI, a more physical collision system, and the franchise mode infrastructure that would define hockey sims well into the 2000s. The Saturn version specifically is the narrower path here. Sega's console had already ceded significant ground to the PlayStation by late 1997, and Saturn sports titles were produced in smaller quantities as third-party publishers began pulling development resources toward Sony's platform. EA did not walk away from Saturn entirely that cycle, but the print runs reflect the shrinking retail footprint. A CIB Saturn sports game from this period survives at a lower rate than the same title on PlayStation or N64 simply because fewer units shipped.

EA printed far fewer Saturn copies, and even fewer players held onto the box.

The box art puts a Colorado Avalanche player front and center, number 21 in the burgundy and blue that was still relatively fresh on the Avalanche after the franchise relocated from Quebec in 1995 and won the Cup in 1996. The jewel case format is Saturn-standard: taller than a PlayStation case, narrower than a Genesis box. Inspect the spine of the case for cracking at the hinge points, which is the most common stress failure on Saturn long boxes after 25-plus years of storage.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the disc is EA Sports NHL 98 for Sega Saturn (not a mismatched insert) and that the manual is present inside the case.

SEGA / BLUE RIBBON

The Sega Era

Sega's 90s catalogue moved fast and took risks. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, the arcades that fed them, the merchandise that trailed each launch. The blue-ribbon years produced cartridges, plush, promotional cards, and magazine inserts that rarely made it past the living room floor. What landed here was stored carefully enough to survive two console generations.

NHL 98 (1997) on Sega Saturn was part of EA's commitment to supporting the platform even as the PlayStation was clearly winning the console war. The Avalanche player on the cover. Likely Peter Forsberg (#21). Represented one of hockey's most exciting teams, fresh off their 1996 Stanley Cup victory. The Saturn version of NHL 98 featured the same gameplay and rosters as the PlayStation version but on Sega's underdog hardware. Saturn sports games are increasingly collectible because the console's smaller install base means fewer copies exist. EA hockey on Sega's forgotten warrior.
