Herzog Zwei on Sega Genesis, Technosoft, 1989. One copy, one owner at a time. Before Dune II shipped, before Command and Conquer redefined the genre for a generation of PC players, this cartridge was already doing the thing: real-time strategy on a console, built around a transforming mech that is also your command unit, your transport, and your only way back into a fight you are losing.
Technosoft was not a household name in the West the way Sega's internal studios were, but their engineering sensibility was precise. Herzog Zwei arrived in Japan in 1989 and reached North American shores in 1990, published by Sega of America. The premise is deceptively simple: two players, two mechs, two armies of ground units, one battlefield split across interconnected maps. The mech flips between jet mode for air transport and robot mode for combat, and every unit you command has to be picked up physically, flown to position, and dropped. There is no cursor. There is no menu tree. The entire RTS abstraction that PC developers would spend the next decade codifying into interface conventions is here, running on a 16-bit cartridge, demanding that you solve it in real time with a three-button pad. Westwood and Blizzard would eventually build empires on the genre. Technosoft had already drawn the map.

This copy is cartridge-only, which is the standard expectation for a 35-plus-year-old Genesis piece at this price point. The label should show the Technosoft branding alongside the Sega of America mark, and the cartridge body is the standard gray Genesis shell. Two-player mode is where the game earns its reputation: single-player is a reasonable demonstration of the system, but the versus mode is the reason collectors who know the title chase it. Check the edge connector pins for oxidation before you seat it, and run both player ports before you close the deal. The label corners are the first place wear shows on Genesis carts this age. Flip it over and check them.

The Sega Era
Sega's 80s catalogue moved fast and took risks. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, the arcades that fed them, the merchandise that trailed each launch. The blue-ribbon years produced cartridges, plush, promotional cards, and magazine inserts that rarely made it past the living room floor. What landed here was stored carefully enough to survive two console generations.
