Sade Diamond Life Cassette Tape
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
"Diamond Life," Sade's debut album on Portrait Records / CBS, came out in the UK in July 1984 and reached North American shelves by September of that year. The cassette format in your hands is the physical release Sony Music pressed for that rollout, carrying all nine tracks from the album that introduced Adu's voice to a mainstream audience that had no category ready for it.
1984 was a crowded year for debut albums, and "Diamond Life" did something most debuts do not: it sold over six million copies in its first year and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985, the first time that award had ever gone to a debut record. The production was Houston Person and Robin Millar's work, recorded at AIR Studios in London, and the sound they locked in, warm upright bass, muted horn lines, Sade's own dry phrasing, was already complete on arrival. Nothing about the record sounded like a band finding its footing. Tracks like "Smooth Operator," "Your Love Is King," and "Hang On to Your Love" were placed in that order intentionally, and the sequencing holds on tape the same way it does on vinyl. The cassette format was still the dominant home-listening format through the mid-eighties, outselling vinyl in the UK by 1983, so this configuration is the version the broadest original audience actually heard first.
The album that proved quiet music could command mass attention in 1984.
This copy is pre-owned, which means the shell has history. Look at the tape window before you play it: ribbon should sit flat with no slack and wind evenly from hub to hub. The label graphics on a US Portrait Records pressing from this period use a cream background with the standard Portrait "P" logo, so confirm the label colors match before assuming UK origin. Check the spine for fading and the shell corners for stress whitening, which on mid-eighties CBS pressings shows up at the four corner seams first. The music inside rewards a good tape deck, but the shell tells you whether this copy has been cared for or just survived.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the pressing origin (UK Portrait vs. US Portrait vs. Canadian CBS release) against the catalog number printed on the label and spine.
