The piece

EA Sports' NBA Live 2001 for the original PlayStation came out in the fall of 2000, right at the hinge point between two distinct NBA ages. The jewel case cover puts a Minnesota Timberwolves player front and center, which tells you almost everything about the moment: Kevin Garnett had already announced himself as the franchise's engine, the young Wolves were a genuine playoff conversation, and EA was tracking that energy in real time.

2000 was a charged year for the NBA. Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant had just taken the Lakers to their first title of what would become a three-peat run, with Phil Jackson running the triangle and Kobe finally deferring enough to let it work. Tim Duncan had a second championship ring from San Antonio. Allen Iverson was a year away from his MVP and Finals run with the 76ers. The League was post-Jordan but not yet settled, and the rosters in NBA Live 2001 freeze that argument exactly: every team's star, every debate, every what-if lineup locked in at that fall 2000 snapshot. For the PlayStation, this was late in the console's lifespan. The PS2 had just launched in North America that October, which means NBA Live 2001 on PS1 is a last-generation release, carrying the full EA Sports production push before the studio shifted all resources to the new hardware. The gameplay loop is the classic five-button PS1 scheme, commentary over the in-game engine, and rosters that feel like a time stamp on one of the more transitional offseasons in recent memory.

This copy comes in the standard jewel case, disc and case present. Condition on these late-PS1 titles varies considerably: look for disc face scratches that can affect load times, and check the case spine for the typical hinge stress that comes from years of regular use. The EA Sports and NBA logos on the disc face should be clean and legible. Cover art should sit flat without the bubbling that shows up on copies that got wet or spent time in heat. Check the inner hub ring on the disc. That's where stress cracks show up first on jewel-case PlayStation titles, and a cracked hub is a playability flag worth settling before purchase.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm disc plays through the full game load on original PlayStation or PS1-compatible hardware without read errors.

SONY / POLYGON ERA

The PlayStation Index

Sony's polygon era rebuilt what a console could look like on a shelf. y2k PlayStation releases shipped with jewel cases, foldout manuals, demo discs, and promotional boxes that were treated as disposable at the time. The ones that held on, through moves and attic boxes and thrift bins, land at the shop with the printing still sharp. We list them with the marks honest.

NBA Live was the basketball game franchise of the late '90s and early 2000s, and the 2001 edition on PS1 captured the NBA at a transitional moment between the Jordan era and the new wave of Garnett, Duncan, and Kobe. EA Sports delivered the complete NBA experience with real teams, real players, and the signature smooth gameplay. A PS1 hoops staple.
