The piece

Shikinjou is a 1987 Famicom mahjong solitaire release by Toei Animation, published for the Japanese domestic market and complete in box. The packaging is immediately recognizable: deep red and gold with imperial Chinese architecture front and center, a design choice that telegraphs the game's tile-matching premise before you even open the flap. This is the Japan-only version, not a localized port, not a North American approximation.

Toei Animation's pivot into Famicom software in the mid-to-late 1980s was a natural extension of their licensing machine. By 1987 the Famicom was the dominant home console in Japan, and third-party publishers from animation houses to toy companies were moving product through the platform at volume. Mahjong solitaire as a genre had already proven itself in Japanese arcades and on home computers, so bringing it to the Famicom made commercial sense. Shikinjou takes the layout-clearing mechanics that defined the form and wraps them in that imperial visual identity, leaning on the Forbidden City iconography as both theme and brand signal. CIB Japanese Famicom software from 1987 survives in complete condition far less often than the cartridge alone. The box was treated as disposable by rental shops and most households; a copy with the original packaging intact is simply harder to find than the hardware count suggests.

Purple Forbidden Castle, 1987, a mahjong puzzler Toei Animation shipped to Japanese living rooms only.

This copy carries the box, the cartridge, and per the listing designation, the full CIB configuration. The red and gold packaging on a shelf reads across a room. It also reads as a legitimate collectible to anyone tracking the Toei Famicom catalog or assembling a 1980s Japanese software library. Condition on the box corners and the cartridge label matters here, as does the integrity of the inner tray if present. Run a finger along the cartridge connector edge before play, and check the box spine for separation at the glue seam.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm complete-in-box contents (box, cartridge, inner tray, any paperwork) match the CIB designation and that no component substitutions are present.

NINTENDO ARCHIVE

The Nintendo Archive

This is part of Nintendo's 80s run, the era that built the shop's back wall. Nintendo shipped cartridges, plush, promotional oddities, and packaging that most buyers threw out on the way to the game. What survived, mostly by accident, ends up here. Every piece is cleaned, photographed, and listed one at a time. Nothing on the archive shelf is a duplicate.
