The piece

Highway Star is the Japanese Famicom release of what North American players knew as Rad Racer, developed by Square and published by Nintendo in 1987. This is the Complete-In-Box version, meaning the cartridge, the original box, and the manual are all present. Square built this before Final Fantasy changed everything about how the world thought of that company.

1987 was a pivotal year for the Famicom catalog in Japan, and Square was still primarily a game developer for hire, putting out racing and action titles while the RPG work that would define them was still forming. Highway Star was a genuine technical demonstration for the hardware: the game supported stereoscopic 3-D glasses, a feature Nintendo bundled with early Famicom 3-D System accessories, and the parallax scrolling used to simulate road depth pushed what the console could render at that speed. The North American version hit retail as Rad Racer under the same basic code, which means players on both sides of the Pacific were running the same engine through different packaging. The box art for the Japanese release is its own object entirely: black field, red Ferrari-style coupe rendered in profile, chrome V-emblem centered at the top, katakana block lettering across the bottom. That box design never appeared on shelves outside Japan.

Square's 1987 Ferrari fantasy, boxed and manual-complete, before RPGs became the only language they spoke.

This copy is CIB, which on a 1987 Famicom release is notable on its own. The box shows the years but holds its structure. The cartridge shell should be clean gray plastic without cracks at the connector end. The manual, printed in Japanese, gives you the control mapping and the course breakdowns that the North American manual also carried, translated almost directly. When you pull the cartridge out, check the connector pins: they should show the light oxidation consistent with a piece that has been stored rather than heavily played, not the green corrosion of a cart that sat in a humid space. Run your finger along the box bottom flap seam and confirm the tuck is still intact, not taped over.

OWNER VERIFY: Square/Nintendo 1987 Famicom production year and CIB completeness (cartridge, box, manual all present and matching).

NINTENDO ARCHIVE

The Nintendo Archive

This is part of Nintendo's 80s run, the era that built the shop's back wall. Nintendo shipped cartridges, plush, promotional oddities, and packaging that most buyers threw out on the way to the game. What survived, mostly by accident, ends up here. Every piece is cleaned, photographed, and listed one at a time. Nothing on the archive shelf is a duplicate.

Highway Star (1987) was known as Rad Racer in North America. A behind-the-car racing game developed by Square (yes, the Final Fantasy studio) that was one of the most popular racing games on the NES/Famicom. The game featured a red Ferrari-style car speeding through varied environments with a 3-D glasses mode that used the system's stereoscopic capabilities. Before Square became synonymous with RPGs, they produced a range of genres including this racing classic. Highway Star was also famously featured in the Nintendo World Championships cartridge, making it a cornerstone of competitive retro gaming history. This Japanese CIB copy with its premium automotive-styled box art is a collector's piece. Pedal to the metal.
