The piece

Adventures of Dino Riki is a 1987 Hudson Soft vertical-scrolling action game, released on the Famicom in Japan before Hudson and Nintendo brought it to the NES in 1989. The cartridge in hand is the standard North American gray shell, label intact: caveman protagonist front and center, pink dinosaur mount beneath him, a blue pterodactyl cutting across the upper corner, and the Hudson Soft bee logo sitting in the bottom-right of the art panel. Cartridge only, no box, no manual.

Hudson Soft was doing serious work in the late 1980s NES library. They published Bomberman, Adventure Island, and Ninja Kid in roughly this same release stretch, and Dino Riki pulled from all of it. The gameplay is pure vertical shooter logic dropped onto a prehistoric backdrop: you start weak, power up through item collection, and die by walking into something dumb. The four worlds cycle through jungle, water, fire, and ice territory, and the difficulty spikes fast enough that most players never made it past World 2 without memorizing enemy wave patterns. Hudson's bee logo was shorthand on the shelf for a certain kind of punishing-but-fair game design that NES collectors still track. This one does not get pulled out of collections the way Adventure Island does, which means clean gray-label copies do not surface often, and when they do, the label condition is the first thing worth looking at.

Hudson stripped the Tokyo celebrity license and gave us a caveman, a dinosaur, and no mercy.

This copy is cartridge-only, which is the standard state for a 37-year-old NES game that actually got played. The label is the first thing a buyer is going to care about: the pink dinosaur art was printed on a lighter stock than some Hudson titles from this period, and the color saturation on worn copies goes fast. The connector pins on a cart this age are worth a quick inspection too. Run your thumbnail along the bottom edge of the connector edge before you power it up for the first time, and check for oxidation or bent pins before you seat it.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the 1989 North American NES release date against the cartridge label text and Hudson Soft copyright line on the back of the shell.

The Nintendo Archive

This is part of Nintendo's 80s run, the era that built the shop's back wall. Nintendo shipped cartridges, plush, promotional oddities, and packaging that most buyers threw out on the way to the game. What survived, mostly by accident, ends up here. Every piece is cleaned, photographed, and listed one at a time. Nothing on the archive shelf is a duplicate.
