Def Comedy Jam All Stars 9 is an HBO home video release from the mid-1990s, one volume in the long-running retail arm of Russell Simmons' stand-up series that ran on HBO from 1992 through 1997. The series gave a network platform to Black comedians at a scale that hadn't existed before, and the VHS volumes were how most people outside the Friday-night cable broadcast caught the sets. This is the physical product, original clamshell case, retail-pressed tape.
HBO's Def Comedy Jam arrived at a moment when stand-up was moving fast. Def Comedy Jam debuted on HBO in 1992 and built its reputation by airing uncensored sets that broadcast affiliates wouldn't touch. The show's host rotation and its rotating guest lineup created a pipeline: comics who worked the Jam stage in the early 1990s went on to anchor films, sitcoms, and their own specials across the rest of the decade. Volume 9 features Sommore and Joe Torry. Sommore was already building a reputation on the touring circuit before the volume was pressed; Torry had a consistent presence on the series across multiple appearances. The retail VHS volumes carried the TV-14 warning on the case, a small paperwork artifact from the period when HBO and its distribution partners were navigating what that rating even meant for home video. Collecting the numbered volumes as a run is a documented project among stand-up archivists. All Stars 9 is one of the harder volumes to find sealed.

This copy comes in the original clamshell. The case is intact. As a pre-owned VHS, the tape condition is the variable worth checking before you commit: shell cracking at the corners, label adhesion, and ribbon tension all matter on a tape that's thirty years old. The tape window on the spine is the tell. Hold it up to a light source and look for ribbon slack or any sign the tape has been rewound under stress. Flat ribbon, no slack, means this one has been stored clean.
