The piece

Universal's 1999 "Bowfinger" VHS is a studio comedy release that arrived at exactly the right moment: Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy at peak cultural traction, paired with director Frank Oz at his most precise, putting a satirical knife into the machinery of low-budget Hollywood filmmaking.

The film came out in August 1999, a summer already packed with prestige pictures jockeying for Oscar position. "Bowfinger" cut against that grain entirely. Martin wrote the script himself, playing Bobby Bowfinger, a broke producer who decides to film a blockbuster around a major star without that star's knowledge or consent. Murphy plays both Kit Ramsey, the paranoid A-list action lead being secretly filmed, and Jiff, Kit's wide-eyed look-alike who agrees to step in for close-ups. The double performance is the kind of thing that gets discussed in industry terms, not fan terms, because it requires Murphy to play genuine neurotic menace in one role and complete guileless optimism in the other, in the same picture, without either character feeling like a sketch. Heather Graham, Terence Stamp, and Christine Baranski fill out a supporting cast that the film never wastes. Frank Oz had come off "In and Out" in 1997 and he kept the same rhythmic, performance-first approach here. The film grossed over $97 million worldwide against a $53 million production budget, a quiet hit that the industry noted even if the awards cycle largely passed it by.

A Hollywood satire that lands its jokes without needing to explain them.

This copy presents in VHS-era Universal packaging, the kind of clamshell release that hit rental shelves and retail racks simultaneously in late 1999. The tape itself is the thing to inspect before you shelve it: check the tape window on the spine-facing side and confirm the ribbon sits flat with no slack or bunching. Slack ribbon means the tape has experienced tension stress, even if the outer case looks clean. The case artwork carries the film's central image, Martin in director's chair, Murphy in both guises, the wordless visual joke the studio committed to for the poster campaign. If you display it spine-out, the Universal logo block on the spine reads clearly. One-of-one copy in the KIC floor rotation.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm this is the 1999 original Universal release and not a later reissue, based on copyright block text on the back of the case.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

VHS cover for "Bowfinger". Universal Special Edition. Starring Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. Martin stands on the left in a loud plaid sport coat and yellow shirt, while Murphy grins on the right in an orange and yellow shirt with glasses. Both look like they're having the time of their lives. The tagline reads "THE CON IS ON." at the bottom in large black text. Clean white background lets the stars sell the movie.

The 1999 comedy where Steve Martin plays Bobby Bowfinger, Hollywood's most desperate filmmaker, who decides to make a movie starring the biggest action star in the world (Murphy). Without telling him. Martin wrote the screenplay and delivers one of his sharpest performances, while Murphy pulls double duty as both the paranoid superstar Kit Ramsey and his naive, nerdy look-alike twin Jiff. Frank Oz directed this love letter to low-budget filmmaking that's also a razor-sharp Hollywood satire. Murphy's Jiff is one of the great underrated comedy performances of the '90s. The con is absolutely on.
