Universal's 1999 "Bowfinger" VHS is a studio comedy release that arrived at exactly the right moment: Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy at peak cultural traction, paired with director Frank Oz at his most precise, putting a satirical knife into the machinery of low-budget Hollywood filmmaking.

The film came out in August 1999, a summer already packed with prestige pictures jockeying for Oscar position. "Bowfinger" cut against that grain entirely.
