The piece

Universal's "Bean" on VHS. The 1997 theatrical release starring Rowan Atkinson arrived in American living rooms on tape shortly after its run, and this is exactly that cassette: the original home video edition, clamshell case, Universal logo across the spine.

Mr. Bean going to America was the premise, and the film delivered it at full volume. Atkinson had been running the character on BBC since 1990, seven years of near-silent physical comedy that built a fanbase across the UK, Australia, and eventually every market with satellite access. The 1997 film was produced by Working Title Films and distributed by Gramercy Pictures in the US, and it pulled in over $250 million worldwide on a modest budget, one of the more quietly shocking box office overperformances of the back half of the nineties. Peter MacNicol was in it. Burt Reynolds was in it. The gag involving Whistler's Mother remains one of the more committed acts of physical comedy committed to wide-release film in that decade. The VHS edition was the dominant home-viewing format at the time of release, so this tape saw real shelf movement at rental stores and retail alike. Thirty years out, the format itself is the artifact.

Silent catastrophe framed in fullscreen: Bean's museum disaster plays better on tape than it ever did theatrical.

This copy is a single one-of-one unit. Tapes from this period show their history through the case finish and label condition, and this one has been visually inspected before listing. If you have a VHS player in the rotation, this is a clean addition. If you are collecting Universal catalog from the mid-to-late nineties, "Bean" sits alongside titles like "The Nutty Professor" and "Liar Liar" as reliable shelf anchors from that run. Down here at Container Park, we keep graded tapes separated from ungraded stock, so what you see listed is what came through the door in a condition worth carrying. Inspect the label at the tape window for any surface lift before you commit to display or play.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the release year edition (1997 theatrical tie-in vs. any later reissue) against the copyright date printed on the cassette casing.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
