VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.

1999. American Beauty on VHS. Sam Mendes's first feature, screenplay by Alan Ball three years before Six Feet Under, shot by Conrad Hall on Kodak 5279.

Produced by Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks at DreamWorks SKG. Co-starring Annette Bening as Carolyn Burnham, Thora Birch as Jane, Mena Suvari as Angela, Wes Bentley as Ricky Fitts, Chris Cooper as Colonel Frank Fitts, Allison Janney, Peter Gallagher as Buddy Kane. Thomas Newman score, the marimba motif. The plastic-bag video scene. The rose-petal dream sequence. Theatrical release September 17, 1999. Five Academy Awards at the March 26, 2000 ceremony: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay.

DreamWorks Home Entertainment pressing, VHS release hit retail late-1999 through early-2000. Two sleeve variants exist in circulation: the original pre-Oscar pressing and the post-March-2000 re-sleeve with the five-statuette gold burst on the front cover. DVD was already eating the rental-store wall by the time this hit shelves, which puts the VHS run into the crossover window: clamshell and slipcase were both being pressed for different retail tiers. DreamWorks stayed with VHS as a secondary-market format for another eighteen months through Gladiator and Cast Away before winding rental pressings down in 2001.

Tape plays. Sleeve wear consistent with age. See photos for the exact copy and confirmation of pre-Oscar vs post-Oscar sleeve variant.
