The piece

"All Dogs Go To Heaven" is the 1989 Don Bluth animated feature, released on VHS through MGM/UA Home Video. This is the theatrical version that put Burt Reynolds in the voice booth as Charlie B. Barkin, a German Shepherd con-dog who gets murdered by his partner, finagle his way back from heaven, and then has the nerve to complicate the whole arrangement by finding something worth sticking around for. Pre-owned MGM/UA release, standard clamshell format from the period.

Don Bluth spent the entire 1980s running a parallel animation studio to Disney and making Disney nervous about it. He left the studio in 1979 with a core crew, and by 1982 he had "The Secret of NIMH" in theaters. "An American Tail" came out in 1986 and outgrossed Disney's "The Great Mouse Detective" that year, a fact nobody at either studio forgot. "The Land Before Time" followed in 1988, produced with Steven Spielberg, and by the time "All Dogs Go To Heaven" arrived in 1989, Bluth was going head-to-head with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" in the same holiday season. He lost that particular matchup at the box office. But the Bluth catalog from this run, NIMH through All Dogs, is its own complete chapter in American animation, and collectors treat it that way.

Bluth trusted kids to handle death, class rage, and a con artist protagonist.

The clamshell should have the MGM/UA logo on the spine and the painted theatrical key art on the front sleeve. The tape itself will carry the MGM lion leadout before the feature. Condition note: pay attention to the case corners on clamshells from this period, they crack along the hinge if they were stored stacked under weight. The cassette body has a small transparent strip where you can see whether the ribbon sits flat or has been left bunched mid-play for thirty years. Slack or bunched ribbon means a rewind before playback, at minimum.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the MGM/UA Home Video release configuration and the original 1989 production copyright on the cassette label or tape leader card.

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 80s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
