The piece

SDI Maui is one of the Hawaii-licensed surf and resort labels that moved high volumes of vacation-market shirts through Maui retail in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. Without the photo in front of us, the production period is provisional, but the camp collar, the print scale, and the construction markers on labels from this period are readable once the shirt is in hand. Mid-weight cotton or a cotton-poly blend, cut with a relaxed chest and a straight hem, was the house standard for resort labels operating out of Maui during this stretch. That construction profile, paired with the label typography SDI was using across the decade, is how we'd peg this one.

The 1990s Maui resort market was a specific ecosystem. Labels like SDI, Hilo Hattie, and Quiksilver's Hawaiian arm were all competing for the same rack space in Kaanapali and Lahaina shops, and the volume they moved means these shirts turn up in good shape more often than comparable mainland souvenir goods. The camp collar was already a standard cut by the early 90s, having worked its way fully out of the 70s revival and into everyday vacation wear. Tropical print shirts from this run tended to go bigger in the chest than modern mediums, and the color saturation on pieces with real age has a warmth that reproduction printing hasn't replicated cleanly. This is the shirt that was actually in someone's suitcase on the flight back from OGG, not a graphic tee from a pop-up in 2018 trying to approximate the feeling.

Faded tropical print, camp collar, and the kind of broken-in warmth no lab can fake.

The tag and the stitch will settle the era claim once this piece is confirmed. Look for the country-of-origin print on the label, the seam finish at the side panels, and any secondary care tag sewn at the side seam. Camp-collar shirts from this period often show their age most clearly at the collar points, where the interlining breaks down before the shell fabric does. Check the collar point on the underside for any buckling or delamination, which reads as honest wear and tells you this piece has been used, not stored flat. Front button placket should show consistent spacing with no missing or replaced buttons. Inspect the collar underside seam before deciding on condition grade.

OWNER VERIFY: Era / production year, confirm via label typography, care tag format, and country-of-origin print against known SDI Maui label series from late 1980s through mid-1990s.
OWNER VERIFY: Provenance / manufacturer construction marker, confirm shell fabric composition (cotton vs. cotton-poly), side seam finish type, and secondary care tag placement against SDI label production standards.
OWNER VERIFY: Condition observation, confirm collar point interlining condition, button placket integrity, and print fading consistency across front and back panels before listing grade is finalized.

The 90s Rack

The 90s rack is where most of the shop's apparel lives. Team tees, tour shirts, promotional jackets, wrestling pullovers, movie tie-in prints that nobody saved on purpose. 90s production runs were large and the survivors are the ones that dodged the rag bin. Each garment is measured flat, photographed on a neutral ground, and listed against the tag size.

SDI Maui button-up from the 90s, size medium. That faded tropical print and the relaxed camp-collar cut put this squarely in the era when surf-adjacent casualwear was the move, weekend BBQ, Fremont crawl, or just posted up looking correct. Construction is solid, colors have that broken-in warmth you only get from actual age. Grab it before someone else does.
