THE PIECE

Mid-1990s FILA Grant Hill signature tee, size Medium, black body. This is from the peak of the FILA-Hill partnership, when FILA was one of the few sportswear brands that could legitimately challenge Nike and Reebok on the court and on the street at the same time.

Grant Hill arrived in Detroit in 1994 as the rare NBA prospect who carried both the hype and the game to back it up. Averaging over 20 points through his first full seasons, making six consecutive All-Star appearances, winning co-Rookie of the Year with Jason Kidd in 1995, Hill gave FILA an athlete who photographed as well as he played. The endorsement deal was one of the biggest non-Nike deals in the league, and FILA leaned into it hard, producing gear that went far past standard jersey-number merch. While Nike was building the Jordan empire and Reebok had Shaquille O'Neal, FILA countered with Hill's image everywhere: shoes, warmups, tees, and graphic apparel that leaned editorial rather than athletic. The result was a mid-90s streetwear moment that still reads correctly today. Detroit Pistons gear from this period also carries the weight of a franchise in transition, rebuilding after the Bad Boys run, with Hill as the face of the next chapter.

When Hill and FILA were trying to make basketball bookish, thoughtful, a little academic.

The graphic on this piece is not a standard action shot. It is a sepia-toned portrait of Hill in his Pistons number 33, rendered in a torn-paper scrapbook construction with tape-mark detailing and handwritten script running through the layout. That treatment was uncommon for player tees of this period. Most athlete graphic shirts leaned toward bold color blocks and action photography. This one reads closer to a magazine editorial than a sporting goods rack, which is why it photographs differently from almost every comparable piece you will find. Condition, colorfastness on the sepia print, and any cracking in the graphic are the things to check on a piece this age. Look at the hem and the sleeve cuffs for shrinkage or distortion that would affect the Medium sizing claim.

OWNER VERIFY: Grant Hill FILA signature tee production year, confirmed as mid-1990s (1994–1997 range most likely given Hill's Pistons tenure and peak FILA partnership activity).

The 90s Rack

The 90s rack is where most of the shop's apparel lives. Team tees, tour shirts, promotional jackets, wrestling pullovers, movie tie-in prints that nobody saved on purpose. 90s production runs were large and the survivors are the ones that dodged the rag bin. Each garment is measured flat, photographed on a neutral ground, and listed against the tag size.

FILA logo upper left. "Grant Hill" in brown handwritten script on a paper-strip at the bottom. FILA tag at the collar.

We picked this up when it came through the shop. FILA is an Italian brand, founded 1911 in Biella. The Grant Hill signature line ran '94 through '98 and made FILA one of the top-three basketball brands of the decade, alongside Nike and Reebok. Hill was Duke's '94 signature guy and Detroit's '94 #3 pick, Rookie of the Year, outsold Jordan in All-Star voting. The sepia-torn-paper layout is different from the standard athlete poster tees of the era; this one photographs more like a magazine spread.
