Vintage Chalkline Magic Johnson Tank Top Shirt
1 OF 1 · NO RESTOCK
Chalkline by Starter. Tank top cut. Full-body sublimated photo of Magic Johnson mid-drive in the gold number 32 Lakers jersey, with the surrounding crowd rendered in grayscale so the color image reads like a spotlight. That contrast treatment was not standard issue. It was premium, and it was exactly the kind of graphic ambition Chalkline reserved for its flagship athletes in the Showtime window.
Magic retired the first time in November 1991 after his HIV announcement, came back for the 1992 All-Star Game and won MVP, then suited up again for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Dream Team. The Showtime run itself, the five championships between 1980 and 1988, was already mythology by the time Chalkline was producing all-over sublimated pieces at peak volume in the late 1980s and very early 1990s. Starter and its Chalkline imprint had locked up NBA, NFL, and MLB licensing and were the dominant name in licensed sports apparel before Champion, Logo 7, and later Nike moved into the space with heavier retail presence. The photo-real sublimation technique on a tank cut was a step above the standard screen print and spoke directly to the collector and the fan with money to spend. Lakers product moved then and it moves now. The franchise, the number 32, the gold colorway, and the grayscale crowd effect make this an immediately readable piece to anyone who follows the category.
Magic in the drive, crowd dropped to gray, sublimated clean on breathing mesh.
This copy shows the full-color photo intact with no visible cracking or wash fade on the sublimation surface. The grayscale crowd gradient is clean around the edges where heavy printing is most likely to ghost or blur. Tank cuts from this period run fitted through the chest and shorter through the hem than a modern active cut, so measure before assuming size. Check the hem stitch and the shoulder seam binding. On Chalkline tanks of this generation the binding either holds tight or rolls, and the condition of that seam edge tells you how many wash cycles the piece has actually seen.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm production era (late 1980s vs. early 1990s) against the Chalkline label style and country-of-origin tag construction.
