THE PIECE

Paramount's 1998 VHS release of "The Truman Show" is one of the sharper pieces in the clamshell format: a Jim Carrey dramatic pivot that the studio packaged with full confidence, not as a comedy sell but as the prestige film it actually was.

By 1998, Paramount was running a tight home video schedule. The film came out in theaters June 5, 1998, directed by Peter Weir, written by Andrew Niccol, and the home video follow-through arrived that fall. Carrey had already proven he could carry a blockbuster four years running: "Ace Ventura" in 1994, "The Mask" that same year, "Dumb and Dumber" before the calendar turned, then "Liar Liar" in 1997. What nobody outside of the production knew going in was how completely he would change registers. Weir pulled a performance out of him that the Hollywood apparatus had not seen coming, and the VHS art reflects that uncertainty in a good way: the poster composition puts Carrey in a posed, almost documentary frame, not a mugging comedy setup. Niccol's script arrived in a pre-social-media moment where the ideas in it felt speculative. A decade later they read like field notes. That gap between the comedy-star expectation and the actual film is exactly why this release has a different weight than a standard Carrey title from the same years. Paramount's cover design leans into the unease without tipping its hand, and that restraint aged well.

The tape that asked the question before the question became inescapable.

This copy is in the clamshell format standard to Paramount's late-1990s home video output. The case spine and front art should be intact and reading clean. Tape ribbon condition is the first thing to check: it should sit flat with no visible slack or warp, which tells you this one was stored upright and rewound properly. If the sticker tab on the back of the clamshell is still present, you have a copy that was handled carefully. The tape itself is a single cassette, no bonus materials, which is exactly how the first run shipped. Hold the clamshell up to the light and look at the tape window, checking that the ribbon hasn't migrated toward either spool hub.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm the Paramount home video release date code on the cassette spine or clamshell interior matches the 1998 production run (catalog number / © date).

VHS / RENTAL COUNTER

The Rental Counter

Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
