The piece

Kings of the Beach on NES is a 1989 beach volleyball cartridge published by Ultra Games, the North American publishing arm Konami used to sidestep its NES exclusivity limitations at the time. Without the photo in front of us, the production year is provisional, so verify before the era claim sticks, but the title, the label format, and the Ultra Games branding all point to 1989 original production. Two-on-two beach volleyball, celebrity player likenesses, and sun-bleached coastal atmosphere. This one belongs to a category of NES sports titles that never got the sequel treatment, which keeps demand steadier than you'd expect.

By 1989, the NES library was deep enough that sports titles had to do something to stand apart. Ultra Games understood that. Their catalog at this point included titles like Skate or Die 2 and the original TMNT, so they were not a boutique publisher padding a roster. Beach volleyball as a genre had real momentum in that moment. The AVP was drawing mainstream attention, and the sport was building toward its 1996 Olympic debut. Mattel had put out a beach volleyball title earlier in the decade, but Kings of the Beach went further, modeling real mechanics including diving saves, cross-court sets, and spike timing that actually had a learning curve. That design choice aged well. Players who go back to it now find it holds up in a way that a lot of late-80s sports titles do not.

A simulation in the truest 8-bit sense, rewarding patience and punishing button mashing since 1989.

The cartridge itself should show the warm sandy-toned label Ultra Games used across their 1989 releases, with the beach scene art intact and the title text reading clean. Shell condition on carts from this year can range from near-mint to cracked corners, so check the seam where the front and rear housing meet. Label fade at the top edge is common from UV and shelf time. The original gray shell with no water damage markers or marker bleed is what you want. Run the cartridge on a known-good NES deck before committing, and give the connector pins a look under light before you seal the deal. Check the connector edge: the pin contact strip should be evenly colored with no heavy oxidation lines across individual pins.

OWNER VERIFY: Confirm production year via label code, copyright text, or board date stamp, as 1989 Ultra Games origin is provisional without visual confirmation.
OWNER VERIFY: Confirm Ultra Games label format and Konami subsidiary branding are intact and match known 1989 production examples, not a later reprint or label replacement.
OWNER VERIFY: Note shell condition at the seam line and connector edge oxidation level as the primary condition flag for this copy.

A simulation in the truest 8-bit sense, rewarding patience and punishing button mashing since 1989.

The Nintendo Archive

This is part of Nintendo's 80s run, the era that built the shop's back wall. Nintendo shipped cartridges, plush, promotional oddities, and packaging that most buyers threw out on the way to the game. What survived, mostly by accident, ends up here. Every piece is cleaned, photographed, and listed one at a time. Nothing on the archive shelf is a duplicate.
