The 1990s were the tail end of the VHS era. This decade marked the format's peak saturation in American homes, before DVD began its slow takeover. Godzilla films had been circulating on tape for years by then, making home viewing a standard way audiences encountered the monster franchise.
Sealed VHS tapes have become collectible objects. They represent a frozen moment in home video retail, before streaming, before DVD, before most people could summon any film to any screen instantly. Collectors value them as artifacts of the format's commercial life.

The Rental Counter
Before streaming flattened the difference between movies, VHS was a physical act. Rentals, buybacks, Blockbuster sleeves, promo tapes, ex-rentals with security stickers still on the side. 90s tapes outlived the stores they came from. We keep them in their original cases where possible and note every sticker, sun-fade, and sleeve crease in the photography.
