Marissa Styled the 1998 Hello Kitty Backpack

The 1998 Hello Kitty backpack came in and Marissa put it on for the shop feed immediately. She knows.

About the backpack

Sanrio produced Hello Kitty backpacks continuously through the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, but the 1997 to 1999 run is a specific sweet spot for collectors. The styling is distinctly Y2K-adjacent: more color pop, more metallics, more contrast trim. The fabric durability is higher than the early-2000s runs.

This one is a 1998 piece. Clean trim. Working zippers on all the main compartments. The interior lining has held color. The front panel character graphic still reads sharp.

Why Sanrio climbs

Sanrio is one of the most consistent collector markets in vintage. Hello Kitty specifically has appreciated every year for a decade. The late-90s run sits at a premium because that is the period the collector community universally considers peak-aesthetic. 2000s pieces are fine. 80s pieces are collectible. Late 90s hits different.

Backpack is on the floor. Marissa made a case for keeping it in the display for a week. We compromised on three days.
