Movie Monday: Angels in the Outfield (1994)
Angels in the Outfield, 1994. Do you remember this one?
A young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. A prime Danny Glover as the Angels manager. Christopher Lloyd as the literal angel. Tony Danza as a broken-down pitcher getting one more shot. Matthew McConaughey in one of his very first roles. Adrien Brody before Adrien Brody. Dermot Mulroney, Ben Johnson, and Neal McDonough rounding it out.
That is an absolutely stacked cast for a kid's baseball movie.
Why the tape still moves
Angels in the Outfield is the kind of film that lives longer on VHS than it does on streaming. The Disney home-video rights have been scrambled for a decade. The tape is often the easiest way to actually watch it with your kids without hunting down a rental.
Any time one comes through the shop, it moves. Usually to a parent who remembers watching it on a snow day in 1996. Occasionally to a Gordon-Levitt completionist.
Where to find it
Check the VHS wall. If we do not have one today, we will have one soon. Also worth pairing with the other Disney-era live-action sports films from that stretch: Cool Runnings, The Big Green, The Mighty Ducks, and Little Giants.
