VHS — Independence Day (1996) — the VHS release of the Roland Emmerich sci-fi blockbuster. Standard VHS sleeve on a dark blue/black background. The iconic image — a massive alien mothership hovering directly above the White House, a beam of blue-white energy shooting down from the ship's center weapon toward the building. The ship's textured underside fills the upper half of the frame. "INDEPENDENCE DAY" in large angular white text at the upper right. Handwritten name "Iovine" visible in marker on the sleeve.
Independence Day (1996) was one of the biggest films of the decade — Roland Emmerich's alien invasion spectacle grossed over $817 million worldwide and became a defining cultural moment of the '90s. The image of the White House being destroyed by an alien beam became the most iconic shot in blockbuster cinema since the Star Destroyer in Star Wars. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman led an ensemble cast in a film that combined disaster movie spectacle with crowd-pleasing action and humor. Will Smith punching an alien and saying "Welcome to Earth" became an instant classic moment. The film's July 4th release and patriotic climax — Pullman's presidential speech remains one of the most quoted in movie history — made it the ultimate summer blockbuster. Independence Day was the best-selling VHS release of 1996. This is the tape that everyone owned. Welcome to Earth.
